he was a good player for 4 years but I really don't think he was good enough to hang his jersey. I know the guys not on the hang his jersey band wagon are getting roasted on here, but I don't know why. shouldnt the rafters be reserved for great players or legends not just guys who stuck around for 4 years and where the 3rd best on a good team.

So for 4 years he wasn't considered the best player on the team but still he put up great career total numbers, I would say that is impressive. Everything he has done over 4 years stat wise, then Big 12 POY and 2nd Team All American imo put him in the rafters.

I am sick of hearing but Fizer, but Tinsley, yeah they were great but they both forgot 1 thing, GRADUATING from ISU. You aren't getting recognized in the rafters if you don't graduate, period end of story.

I'd put Victor Alexander before Ejim.

I have a huge problem if Iowa state said "Sorry Marcus and jamaal...we know you made us money hand over fist, got us national recognition, and were all Americans recognized by almost every publication, media outlet, coach and writer.....but we won't properly honor you because you didn't graduate"

thats idiotic. And THEN you wonder why they don't come back. Smh.

It's not idiodic. They are student-athletes and if you want to be recognized as one of the greats as an athlete you need to fulfill the student part also.

College sports should ignore the college part?

Serious? As an institution of higher learning, it's somehow improper for them to have graduation as a requirement to achieve an honor given by the school? Think about how dumb that sounds. It's just a colossally stupid POV. I seriously hope that you're just deliberately stirring the pot.

Next, mattyice will tell us that actually playing for Iowa State should not be requirement for jersey retirement. Maybe we should hang Kirk Hinrich's jersey. After all, he almost came here. No wonder Kirk never comes to ISU games. What is Pollard thinking?

Ill wait for the jersey chasers to spin this one.

no spin necessary. Your statement was that a school requiring graduation before jersey retirement is idiotic. That statement is still just as stupid as it was before.

No spin, because I never said it was REQUIRED. I said it should be considered and strongly at that.

See bigdaddykane's post above and tell me where the guys you think should come before Ejim rank in those categories and then also tell me if they were Big12/8 POY or an All American.

As is yours. Except I have proof of how dumb your statement is....considering we let grayer without graduating.
thanks

except I've never said that Ejim, or anyone, should or shouldn't be honored, only that a school choosing to make graduation a requirement is not idiotic. My only point, in fact, was to comment on how dumb your post was. Beyond that, I haven't expressed an opinion on anything.

When did season scoring and rebounding averages become the only metric in determining whose jersey to hang?

Overall body of work = Hang Ejim's jersey

Averages are a way to compare bodies of work. If you just look at overall totals, they are skewed by two stats... #1 in games played, #1 in games started.

Here is his overall body of work... Melvin was a role player. He was a very good role player, but still a role player. He came when we were terrible so he got on the court a lot as a freshman. He was never the focal point in his career. He was never the MVP of his team (yes, including this year). He was never the go-to guy game-in and game-out. He had one huge game (and it was awesome) against one of the worst B12 teams ever.

His career is amazing because it was consistent. He was consistently good and that isn't easy. If you want to hang his jersey for consistently being good, thats fine. But be clear about it.

Show me where he was great. I just think rafters should be reserved for greatness.

So just so i can recap...MY view is idiotic because YOU think a rule that in no way is required by the school or athletic department....nor has been adhered to in the past regarding hanging jerseys and can't possibly be expressed.

Welcome to cyclone fanatic.

I'm talking about your assertion that if a school, (ISU or any other) had a graduation requirement for jersey retirement, that it would be somehow a slap in the face to the players who never graduated. Like somehow the Purple Heart Medal dishonors all of those soldiers who didn't get shot. It's a ridiculous viewpoint, regardless of if Iowa State actually has that requirement or not. That's my point. Your post was made under the assumption that Iowa State had a graduation requirement, so whether or not it actually does is immaterial to the discussion.

Victor Alexander: 1,892 total points which is 4th all-time (17.1 average) but averaged greater than 19.7 during Sophomore through Senior years. Led his team in scoring last 3 years. Had over 810 rebounds, leading the team in rebounds his last 3 years. He had 120 blocks in his career (4th all-time), including 51 during his senior year while playing in 111 games.
