Railey, McNight, Sledge, Law, Gibson, Fowler and Okoro. I can't promise that this is all of them, just the ones that I was able to put pen to paper. Where's the "sky is falling" crowd then.......it's called WINNING. Some of those kids may have not liked Fred, but I think most leave for other reasons. Basketball has 13 shollies, football is 85 with total roster at about 100. Things don't always work out for kids for whatever reason. Just food for thought.

None of them were playing.

Surely, even someone with your mental capacity can see the difference between those players and players who were starters when they quit. You can see the difference, can't you?

I wouldn't say it is beyond the realm of possibility Mangino 'coached him out'. This is part of the reason he was in trouble at Kansas. Comments like, and I'm paraphrasing from memory, 'You better play well or I'm going to send back to your brothas in the hood.' Mangino will either make you or break you. He has even said so before. In the end it's all just useless speculation. Kid quit, happens all the time.

You guys know this, but winning cures all. Rhoads' rah rah approach was fine with everyone when there were wins attached to it. That was the same with the players as well. Exactly the opposite with Ferentz. His calm demeanor had fans irate when they weren't winning. I've been a part of tons of teams as a player and coach and on both good and bad teams there's been guys quit mid season. I don't like it. Don't agree with it. IMO it says a ton more about the player than it does the coach.

I'll try not to attach your mental capacity, but I'm sure even you understand that football and basketball are COMPLETELY different sports. I understand a 5th year senior who plays in the trenches has to be the hardest position there is. Physical, hard on the body with absolutely no glory (especially the O-line). People have already said he was questioning this summer if he wanted to come back. People have quoted that he wants to finish his one class, graduate, LOSE weight and move on with his life. Maybe if we won last week and we were favored in this next game, Gannon is still here.....common denominator, winning.

All of those kids left because they didn't get enough playing time/Fred told them it's best to transfer. Completely different situations. FH had some "headcases" on his teams that could have become problems (Royce, Kane), but they were fine here. Part of that has to do with the coach and with winning. Both on the football team are lacking right now, so it's not surprising that a player has left.

One thing I would add to this is that this was both Royce's and Kane's last chance to make it to the next level. Gannon has no next level in football, so there is some difference there too. Gannon's still on the roster if he thought he had a shot at the NFL. Just saying.

Exactly, Fred turning over the bottom of the roster each off season is nothing like losing a starter in the middle of the season.

Texas Tech's starting QB goes down to injury last year and the back up comes in and is a heck of a great player. Some would compare Kliff to Fred in the way that he is a players coach, young and the players really seem to like him. So you have a battle now for starting QB and as a QB you are playing for a HC that was a QB. Most players would be chopping at the bit for the opportunity to win that job, yet Kliff has TWO, that's right not just one, TWO QB leave the team. One of which had the opportunity to be the man. So it does happen to other teams with other players that aren't at the bottom of the roster. The world isn't ending.

A parent of a walk-on from ankeny (and Iowa Western CC) was just on Kxno. His son has left the program and transferred to D2 in Mankato State but what was more interesting is that he said there is a definite separation in the locker room and the kids aren't buying CPR and his Ra Ra speeches anymore...

Kids these days are coddled and carted around in a mini-van their

Why would the parent of a former player feel the need to call into a joke of a radio show and give his 2 cents? No matter what he really knows and doesn't know, it is just weird to call into a show and give your opinion. The only reason to do so would be to stick up for you child.

The kid seems like a good guy, but dad is a Hawk fan in disguise and a tool

I'm not sure whether this was just a shot in the dark or not, but from what I've heard this is precisely what happened. FWIW. I'm sure the whole "burnt out" thing played a large role in it as well.

I'm the piece of ****? Sounds like our OC is the piece of ****. He's a bad guy. It's documented and he was fired from one of the worst football programs in the country despite winning 3 bowls games. Sure, other than 1 season he was an absolutely abysmal 16-40 in conference. The school was too worried they were gonna get sued if they kept him and a lot of the team had turned against him.

It would take a very evil person to try to use a kid's alcoholic dad as a motivator. I don't think that can be denied.

Mangino will now no doubt lump in Kipp with the 1 percent of KU players who don't "appreciate" his style of coaching, which style includes:taunting a kid for having an alcoholic father; threatening to send a guy back to St. Louis, where he could get shot with his "homies"; threatening to send another guy back to Oakland, where he could spend the rest of his life "drinking out of a brown paper bag"; poking and grabbing players and occasionally making them crawl across 200 degree turf for the grievous crime of missing a weigh-in. He's basically Don Rickles meets Junction Boys meets Ponderosa.
