targeting penalty

By the rules, the hit on West was definitely targeting, unlike Cotton Moya's which was actually a shoulder pad hit to the shoulder that the refs had a bad angle on (thinking it was helmet to helmet) and then failed to overrule. I think a much better analogy to the targeting play was the personal foul call on (I think) Mitch Meyers, when Iowa had the false start and he shot threw and tackled Rudock right after the whistle blew. Did Meyers do that on purpose? No way. Should they have called the penalty, probably--though I think it was more understandable and questionable as a call than the targeting blow. Given that and some of the terrible calls that went Iowa's way, I'm really sick of Iowa fans complaining about the targeting call. If they want to complain, they should complain about their team. ISU should have won that thing 31-10.

ISU booed Cotton-Moya's ejection, and that was just as clearly targeting.

No way was Cotton-Moya's targeting call as obvious as Lomax's. Cotton-Moya's was a shoulder to shoulder hit that looked head to head from where the ref that made the call was standing. The Fox announcers said as much during the game. The replay official just failed to correct the call (something that ISU is EXTREMELY used to).

I hated that call. They blew the play dead really late and the play developed most of the way so I don't think he even knew what happened until way after the play.

I'm sure that he didn't hear the whistle and didn't know what was going on until afterward. But it is a tough call either way, because he crushed Rudock, who had relaxed his body. I didn't like it either, but I think they had to call it. The real problem on the play was the Iowa's O-line let him shoot through without protecting their QB.

I'd agree with that. My opinion though is they took the easy way out. I want to see the official say we screwed up and didn't make the call when we should have and thats why the QB got rocked. It all goes back to players or teams getting screwed because the official messes up.

Agree. They had to call it, as much as it sucked at the time. Would be screaming at the refs at the top of my lungs if same thing happened to SR.

And that is why I think it is similar to the targeting call. The HAD to call both of them. But hok fans have conveniently neglected to remember that they called the late hit on us as well.

I seem to remember that happening to Sam once last year, he went down and nothing was called, and I was screaming at the top of my lungs. Can't remember which game, Texas maybe?
