Uh, no. Vaughn committed more than a month before Clark did. Plenty of time to recruit Clark if we wanted to. By all accounts we backed away from Clark thinking available transfers would be more impactful

You may be right, but I disagree that your timeline makes it as simple as it looks. We may have had time to re-recruit him, but Clark seemed miffed on the stalling and was courted by Michigan State and Indiana. Article written on him pretty much eludes to that. A guy that Michigan State coveted would not be turned down by us other than the big fish that we thought we had reeled in. But bottom line, it doesn't matter now.

A month before decision day was way too late for ISU to get back into the recruitment of that kid. Most kids are all about who has recruited them the longest and the most consistent. It's very rare for a team to be able to hop back into recruiting a kid unless they are light years better than the other programs offering him a scholly.

twocoach, could you please start a thread and direct it at Fred Hoiberg to give him tips and tricks to succeed at basketball since you know everything. Ever. Itd be nice if we could put your 3,000 posts into one thread so we can read at our leisure as opposed to having to sift through all these other dummys posts.

I always assumed this must be the secret to Bill Self's success.

ISU wasn't hard after Clark, the reason he isn't in Ames has absolutely nothing to do with Vaughn

he was just in for his official visit to ISU a week and half before Vaughn committed, so they were in good shape at that time, might have been thought as leader at that point. It was after that visit, that ISU decided to go in different direction. And to counter your point in the case of this recruit, it was johnny-come-latelys, as MSU jumped in late and signed him.

Who did waiting for Vaughn cost us?

I don't believe it cost us anyone because BDJ came in. He will likely give what Rashad would have while likely not being a pampered *****, and seeing how its his last chance to prove something, will likely come in hungry, much like DeAndre did.

Interesting, seems a lot of teams jump in towards the end and end up with the player.

not what I heard, but you probably have better sources

Cytwins likely does have better sources. The guy eats, sleeps, and breathes recruiting and I am very thankful for all the updates he puts on these forums.

This article paints a real good picture of his recruitment and how it all went down

http://chronicle.com/article/The-Courting-of-Marvin-Clark/146517/

Kansas State would soon have more company. In mid-February, an Indiana assistant came to Kansas to watch Mr. Clark play. At the end of the session, he offered a scholarship.“We’re serious,” the coach told Mr. Clark. “When can we get a visit scheduled?”
Michigan State was also interested. But because the university had not made an offer, Mr. Clark was not considering it as seriously.
“I’m focused on schools that really want me,” he said. To do otherwise, he said, wouldn’t be fair to the coaches who had put in the time.
Just as his recruitment was heating up, the line from Iowa State went cold. When Mr. Caruthers asked why, a Cyclones assistant told him that Mr. Hoiberg needed reassurance.
The assistant asked for Mr. Clark’s statistics on the season and wanted to see some recent game film. He insisted that he still wanted to get the deal done, his texts showed.
But Mr. Clark was not happy.
“How do you go from being my best friend to stop talking to me?” he said.
After consulting his handlers, he decided to cut ties. Just like that, his latest No. 1 choice was out.

I always took it as they cooled on Clark because Vaughn looked like a real possibility right around then.

They thought they had Vaughn in the bag after the Michigan game...I don't think Vaughn had anything to do with Clark, they knew they'd have room for both

I assumed ISU cooled on Marvin Clark because Hoiberg wasn't quite sure Clark fit what Hoiberg was looking for and when ISU wavered then Clark got upset and left us hanging. But we ended up with BDJ (technically I guess) and I'd rather have one year of BDJ than 1-4 years of Marvin Clark.
