A $5,000 stipend seems pretty reasonable to me, I'm sure we'll be doing it as well once it is allowed. I just wonder how that'll work for athletes on partial scholarships.

We are really degenerate when it comes to thread titles around here.

I like the 'use of image' stipend. It at least addresses issue of 'marketing' players without compensation.

Whether arbitrary amount of 5K is 'fair' is obviously up for debate. But you have to start somewhere.

agreed. Even acknowledging it as something of value would be a big step. So far, the NCAA has resisted admitting that.

That $6M is going to hurt ISU's AD budget ($62M) than it will hurt Texas' AD budget ($166M). That's nearly 10% of ISU's budget while only about 3.5% of theirs. And of course ISU could pay less than the big boys but that would be competitive suicide.

Agreed, there is value. There is also value in having free marketing of your accomplishments and likeness, especially if you have dreams of going pro in that pursuit.

Nope. No there's not. Blake Bortles got nothing out of his stint at UCF.

Therein lies the difficulty of this, and definition of 'amateur' and level playing field.

As early as the late-80s, I thought college athletes should be paid as a part-time job. Establishing a way that schools could set wages that were roughly equal based on cost of living based on location, and not be able to out-bid for players, was always my stumbling block.

I don't think that ISU has as many athletes on scholarship as Texas does. In 2012 (the latest budget I could find quickly on google) our entire scholarship expenditures were less than $6 million.

This, of course, is a fear coming from the Power 5 configuration - at least for those with a clue. Filthy rich schools like UT and tOSU will over time simply spend the lower class, like K-State and Northwestern, into oblivion.
