I realize you're probably on the JV football team at Ames or something but I don't think Ames keeps it very close by the end of the game

Screw you I'm not on the JV team. It's the playoffs anything can happen.

When I was in high school we were the #8 seed and went on the road in this round of the playoffs to play the #1 seed. Blew them out on their field; they were undefeated at the time. So anything can happen.

With that said Dowling will win.

The road win I will pick is Solon over West Delaware in 3A.

If Ames keeps it within 28 points, I'll consider it a win.

A very good football mind who has a good football coaching history at the 4A level and has worked with Dowling up until recently said this years Dowling team is better than last years, and next years going to be better than this years.

Anything can happen, but Dowling losing would be more than twice as big an upset as the next best upset in 4A all season. It's not happening.

Predicted: Dowling by 36.53
Biggest upset: Prairie predicted to win by 16.97
Actual Score: CR Prairie 23-27 Iowa City High 16.97

Not in highschool football they can't, and typically don't. By that I mean the top seeds that are perennial talents don't typically lose until the Semis, or Finals. But as a Cyclone fan I understand your optimism. If you can't beat the team in the regular season, you typically aren't going to beat them in the playoffs. Unless game 1 was like a 1 score game the first time.

Once again I will use a different example from my own time in high school. Lost to a team by a touchdown in the regular season (at home); beat them by 30+ in the playoffs (on the road). I'm sure it's happened to others too, so it's definitely possible.

Soooo why do losing teams make the playoffs? I think it's about money, but would like someone else's opinion.

Soooo why do losing teams make the playoffs? I think it's about money, but would like someone else's opinion.

Quick overview - when the playoff field was 16 per class, you would sometimes have a district with three teams tied for the lead. Since only the top two district teams moved on, you might see a 7-2 or even an 8-1 team miss the playoffs.

So the state added another round, with the top four teams in each district making the playoffs. This did assure pretty much every team at 6-3 or better will make it in.

However, Class 4A has never had as many as 56 teams, which is a typical number for the other classes. That class was at 48 the past several years, and just 46 this season. When 32 of 46 teams make your playoffs, you are going to end up with some losing teams.

So, money is definitely the reason the state will never cut a round out of the playoffs - that's like 96 more games with the gate going straight to the IHSAA. But, the original reason for expanding was to get all the deserving teams in. That happened to bring a lot of non-deserving teams along with it.

I think a reasonable compromise would be to switch 4A from 32 playoff teams (four per district) to 24 (three per district) and give the eight district winners a bye for the Wednesday games. Have #3's play #2's on Wednesday and the winners of those go up against #1's on the following Monday.

My senior year I believe Dowling was #1 and Ames faced them in the playoffs. Ames had made a recent QB change because the current QB was a freak of a receiver as well, so they figured they'd just throw the ball to him. I think we (Ames) only won 3 games that season.

Ended up losing with a chance to win on the final drive, 31-27

But we aren't beating Dowling. Ames is more talented this year. But Dowling is 10x more talented.

Did you just say Ames is more talented this year than last? If you did, your the only person on the planet that thinks that.

thats everyone's solution. However, they're not giving up the money.
