Lopsided divisions is lame (see SEC), which is why you split the TX and OK schools. I think you have to have divisions to make scheduling somewhat fair.
IIRC OU and UT didn't want the possibility of playing each other in a CCG. They wanted the winner of that game to have a clear shot at a title. Of course in years like the last couple with how bad UT has been it's a moot point.
As a Cyclone fan, I'd want to expand back to divisions adding two more northern and weaker teams (compared to UT/OU/TCU/Baylor) just to make the schedule less awful. I'm thinking CSU (an Air Force fan so that rather pains me), Cincy, Memphis or something along those lines. I feel like the pie is growing fast enough that the slices will get larger as these teams move up into getting P5 money. However, I'm still not convinced that's the greatest for the Big 12's playoff chances. If we had divisions, the championship game would have been Baylor/KSU with Baylor having everything to lose and much less to gain. The entire conversation is different if FSU loses/OSU wins by a small amount. Everyone would think how incredibly sneaky it was for the Big 12 two get two teams in the playoffs. Losing out every couple years on a playoff spot when you can get two in once or twice a decade seems like a decent tradeoff.
Good point, I rescind my proposal to split them up. So, divisions would be TX + OK schools and the other division would the be remainder schools regardless of geography. That could be nasty for BYU and UCF to travel to each other for the non-revenue sports.
If Mizzou, Georgia Tech, or Wisky had won we aren't having this discussion. If 2 of them had won both TCU and Baylor get in and everyone is saying how brilliant the Big 12 is for not having their best teams get knocked off 12 hours before the selection show. I think the big 12 got knocked out of the championship game in the past because of an upset in the championship game. Not worth adding two mediocre teams just because some years it may help you into the final 4.
The obvious negative aspect of a CCG is a team playing itself out of a shot at a national title by losing. How many times has something like that happened? I honestly don't know.
KSU losing to aTm is the one I remember most. What about the year that CU beat NU on Black Friday and went to the Big 12 title game while NU got shut out of... wait, they played Miami in the Rose Bowl for the Bowl Alliance or BCS title, didn't they???
I'm not so sure about that the Big IIXII will go strictly with geography.
The SEC (and to a lesser extent the B1G) topload one division. In football, this means that the second place finisher in the strong division has a good chance of getting in to the playoff along with the winner or the title game if they take care of business. I can see OU and Texas wanting to be in the same division both to protect their rivalry game and to give the second place finisher a chance at the playoff.
That would be awesome! Add SMU and Grand View University and we could also have the Methodists and Lutherans covered. Do Scientologists have a university we can add?
Jeff Long, CFP Committee Chairman, made this same statement this morning. It sounded like yes the 13th game made a difference, but it could have been a negative for those teams if they lost. It sounded to me like the two main issues were those teams like Baylor and TCU need to bump up their Non Conference schedule. They each played a FBS School and SMU (who is worst than most FBS schools). In comparison OSU's worst non-conf game was Kent State, which was a slight step up from SMU. Barry Alvarez made this point before he was even on this committee, when he said the BIG is going to have to ban scheduling FBS schools. That should be step 1, at least for the schools that will be competing for the conference title.
Listening to ESPN radio this morning and they brought up a good point that the Big 12 should try to raid the the Big 10 since they have 14 teams.

I think more often than not, the Big 12 is going to have co-champions. This will make the decision very hard for the committee going ahead. If this happens next year, I'm not sure the Big12 can suffer the amount of negative PR about "not being on the same page / field" as the other P5 programs. We are seen as weak in the media. I believe expansion is inevitable.
I also believe that the B1G, PAC, and SEC will turn down the legislation on 10 team championship game. If that happens, I think we will have 2 more teams quickly.
Nortre Dame is supposedly required to join the ACC by contract if they go "all in" on a conference before 2024 or something like that. (Probably the ACC GOR expiration date). So we can probably forget about them. They seem themselves as an east coast team anyway.

If balance and geographic connectivity are the goal this may be the best we get. I'd take a chance on Tulane becoming another Baylor or TCU before adding Houston though. At least a successful Tulane brings another urban market. If Rutgers brings NYC with no actual NYC presence, Tulane brings us a new city/state.
BYU is the team that doesn't "take from the pie" they're a push without the benefits of playing in a power 5. They'll likely be one of the "haves" of college football within a decade of joining.
If nothing else I'd prefer BYU as football only to pair with Cincy as opposed to adding Memphis. Memphis will always be there down the road, it is just too desperate of a move.
