I'd rather over pay for Jon Lester than Alfonso ******* Soriano. I trust Theo.

That still would have been worth it if they'd won in either 08 or 09. They just never recovered from Prior and Wood blowing their arms out (thanks Dusty)

The world found out Lester was out on the Giants when, in meetings, just after getting a phone call, the Giants GM hung up the phone and said "Well, we didn't get one of the roses."

Wow. Cubs are looking into getting Jonny Gomes.

1. Many consider him, over David Ortiz, as the leader of the Red Sox team that won the World Series in 2013

2. Age makes him cheapish.

3. Not amazing numbers, but what he lacks in stats he provides in leadership

My guess is he is our starting LF next year, then moves to platooner as the rest of the gang comes up.

The twitter just gave me this realization. Lester and Rizzo are both cancer survivors. Wonder how many teams can say they have two cancer survivors on their roster?

Gomes would play the short side of a platoon with Coghlan in LF if he came. Think he's something of a fall back right now as the front office has their sights set a little higher as LF is a spot for a big bat addition.

I'd be disappointed if they finished this off-season with Gomes and Ross. You just spent 155 million on an ace, go after some guys better than two players that are well past their prime.

This isn't about players but it was just announced that 45 games are going to now be on WGN but Chicago area only. So that's now 70 games (45 WGN & 25 ABC Chicago) that I don't believe Iowa will be able to watch unless a local station can maybe get the rights to show those games. UGH...

I don't get this. They terminate the WGN contract (national) for a couple local contracts? Can the payout possibly be better that way? When that first happened I thought for sure that CSN was offering a larger payout for the whole schedule.

If it wasn't for WGN I wouldn't be a Cubs fan.

Trivia. What does WGN stand for? No cheating

That's interesting, I just looked it up. Had no idea. I won't spoil it for you though.

Definitely agree on being a Cubs fan thanks to WGN. We moved to Storm Lake when I was in 5th grade and that's the first time we ever had cable. I watched every game that summer and became a huge fan. That was nearly 30 years ago now and I'm still a fan.

Wrigley gaming network (I have no idea)

Wonder if that insane "home market" setup is still in place that would keep Iowa based fans from getting MLB.tv?

Do the Rickets really think the majority of Cubs fan live in Chicago area - that these are the people they need TV for? That seems polar opposite of the NFL idea where local games are BLACKED out.

Seems MLB does anything it can to keep people from seeing games.

Edit: Looked it up too. Makes some sense I suppose. Arrogant. But makes sense.

Yep, and even if you wanted to buy the MLB Extra Innings package or MLB.tv on the web the Cubs games would be blacked out since Iowa is considered a "Cubs market" by MLB. So unless the blackout rules get changed or hopefully a local station maybe can get access to those games otherwise we are screwed for those 70 games.

When I first heard about the WGN-9 deal (hadn't heard about the ABC deal), I foolishly hoped that CSN would broadcast it nationally - but I can't imagine they'd do that when they don't have the deal for what has to be their largest market.

One of these articles stated the Cubs can't sign another cable deal until the CSN deal is up in 2019. Guess we're screwed.

Wow that sucks. I'm in the same boat as above. I became a Cubs fan BECAUSE of WGN. it was either that or a Braves fan because they were on TBS a lot growing up.

Hopefully doesn't come to this being the only option but MAYBE the blackout restrictions for the MLB.tv web service might be eased up for this upcoming season according to this article from last August:

MLB.tv blackout restrictions could be eased starting next season
By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer
August 23, 2014 12:11 pm ET
According to the Associated Press, Major League Baseball may start easing up on the blackout restrictions of their MLB.tv streaming service starting next season. Fans are currently blacked out of games in their home market, regardless of whether the team is home or away.
Here's more from the Associated Press:
In an interview this week, Bob Bowman said he is optimistic that a deal could be reached soon with various cable operators, channels and ballclubs. The catch is that even with an MLB.TV subscription, which starts at $20 a month, fans will also need a cable or satellite TV subscription to view hometown teams at home.
"Everyone's trying to solve it," Bowman said. "If our hands were 4 feet apart three or four years ago, they are now 6 inches apart," Bowman said. "We're moving in the right way. We continue to talk. The dialogue is professional."
Bowman, MLB's head of online business, said it's possible only some networks will agree to participate, meaning there may still be some blackouts in place. The parties still need to work out "the look and the feel of it, the marketing of it, the branding of it, economics," he added.
Blackouts currently extend to some national broadcasts, though those have been lessened in recent years. The All-Star Game was streamed on MLB.tv this year for the first time. A similar plan is in place for the postseason this year. In the past, the wild-card, LDS and LCS postseason rounds were available online, but only with alternate camera angles and not the live broadcast feed.
The Yankees' owned YES Network offered an in-market streaming option for an additional fee in the past that allowed YES subscribers in the New York area to stream Yankees games online with MLB.tv. That service was discontinued for the 2014 season, however.
Needless to say, anything that lessens MLB's blackout restrictions is a major win for fans. I understand there are major economic hoops to jump through, but fans just want to watch baseball. Anything that can make more games available to fans is a plus the game.
