Same here HGoat, as far as B12/ACC merger. It would have put that qualifier close to where Big 10 is.

The good thing is NDSU and SDSU are trying to improve. Maybe this will help Wyoming take the next step also.

Where does Fresno State go? Pac 12?

First I've heard about this. Not really an ideal situation in my mind, but we had to do something..

I was really hoping for an ACC/B12 merger.

ACC and Big 12 are mutually idiotic for not banding together on as many things as possible. There are 3 obvious predators and 2 leagues (was three) are obvious prey. Both conferences should be determined that if there is more poaching the 'fourth' big conference is just b12/acc merge. Yet neither seems remotely interested in that.

NDSU outscored all Pac-12 teams last year at NCAA.

The only thing the Pac-12 has over the WWC is name recognition, they aren't much better at wrestling, which is a little strange since California produces a decent number of really good wrestlers.

I've posted this before, but this is how I rank the wrestling conferences, based on the rate that they produce qualifiers, All Americans, and NCAA champions.

Tier 1: Big Ten, Big XII
Tier 2: ACC, MAC
Tier 3: EIWA (just due to sheer size)
Tier 4: EWL, Pac-12, SoCon, WWC

I think the B12/ACC merger for wrestling fell apart because of naming rights. ISUChip mentioned this and I agree. You need somebody that wants to partner with you. I also think NCAA did not want to see B12/ACC merger. B1G already has so much power it is crazy and ACC/B12 qualifier would be a very strong 2nd and leave S Con, Pac 12, WWC struggling and maybe more eliminating the sport.

My understanding, which is fueled by message board rumors so might be totally wrong, is that the NCAA wouldn't let the ACC and Big XII merge for a qualifier unless they formally merged as a conference for wrestling (not for anything else, just a joint wrestling conference) but that the conferences couldn't come to an agreement on that.

I am a little torn on what to say for this.

1. The Big 12 had to do something, because, well just look no further than this year and the Big 12.
2. UNI just left that conference/qualifier for the MAC because it was weaker than the MAC and joining the MAC was more benficial.

So it was really needed, but at the same time doesn't really make an elite conference. Like someone mentioned it's very similar to the EIWA

I don't know if the ACC thing would have got done, but obviosuly would have been more ideal.

It was 2AM and the Big XII took the last girl left at the bar home.

It'd be cool if D1 just went to regional qualification like they do at the lower levels. Just move conference tournaments up a week or two.

I agree. It would be best for wrestling as a whole. I think under current arrangements, B1G definitely has an advantage. More power to them, but with B1G Network and strength of the wrestling conference, others better wake up or get left behind

I also agree. It's the most logical thing to do and would be best for the sport as a whole

Those 2, I hope continue to improve a little and Wyoming has potential. Not going to get much out of the other 3. NDSU seemed to have some problems losing guys this year, both Lehmans left the program for Nebraska, I think.

Announcement is coming sometime this spring, according to multiple sources.

It allows the Big 12 to have automatic qualifiers again, and it allows the WWC schools to have a "come wrestle in the Big 12" recruiting pitch. Good for all parties.
