This thread is not representative of the crowd's reception of Walton if he came to Hilton. He would be a rock star if he ever paid a visit. Absolute rock star with the students.

Agreed. Just like Vitale; a lot of people hate him - me included - but he was mobbed when he (finally) came to Hilton.

I assume you mean that you just dislike Vitale's broadcasting style, because he was just tremendous with ISU fans that day. You could tell that he loves being with fans and the crowds.

Flower child or not, Bill does know basketball.

It's amazing that Wooden was able to get him to conform to the system, sock preparation and all.

He knows basketball and played the game with outstanding fundamentals. Don't know if he was on or off anything at UCLA, but the dude could play better than almost anybody else in NCAA history.

I would have expected his favorite three teams to be Colorado, Washington, and wait, what?

Yes, I thought about qualifying it but I figured most people would know what I mean. I think he has become a caricature of himself and I cannot stand listening to his broadcasts. There are several broadcasters who seem to think the game is about them rather than the teams playing.

Just like there are many directors who seem to think that the closeups of a player who just scored or fans going crazy or the bench jumping up and down are more important than the live ball play that is happening on the court. Anytime the viewers miss a steal and score or a fast break because the director was doing a "honeyshot" then they have failed at their job. Anytime we miss the start of action because they are still putting up their highlight packages or a full screen stat graphic they have failed at their jobs. I love that stuff as much as the next guy, but it is for deadball times, not when the ball is live.

Go ahead and do your worst.

Walton's awesome. I'd love to hear him and Musburger call a game. Brent would be drunk, Bill would be high, and the whole thing would be amazing.
Wow, yes. I haven't liked listening to Walton most of the games I've watched but if ESPN paired him with Musburger? That would be appointment tv.

Oh my god, he just went on a minute lecture about Cajuns, some Indian tribe, and then ended it with a Grateful Dead reference.

He's also been talking about Musberger. Maybe he reads CF.

Bill Walton is so awkward. No chemistry with the other announcer. They barely even talk about the game, Walton just constantly interrupts and is rude to the other announcer.

Somebody needs to do an audio-edit of a mock broadcast w/ the Musberger-Walton team. I have the software to do it, but not nearly enough time.

Or here's a broadcast trio for ya: Gus Johnson, Bill Raftery and Bill Walton.

That almost might be too much.

He came in 1999, not for a basketball game but campaigning for Bill Bradley. He was more wandering around awkwardly than getting a rock star reception. But that is the difference between politics and sports fans; an awkward combo that this event of Bill Bradley surrogates attracted (Phil Jackson, Bill Russell etc. also there). I spoke with him briefly it was a very odd conversation about cows.

So, he's a lot like Harry Carey (or is it Will Farrell)?
