I didn't say "over the course of the year" I said this team feels like defense is optional.

Don't be an Ostrich with your head in the sand. Baylor was making uncontested and wide open three point shots all night. This wasn't because ISU was playing "good" defense it was because they were playing poop defense.

And that isn't a generalization...they were not playing good defense. If you think they were, you probably LOVE the Harlem globetrotters

Shake my head

Yes, and that's a blatantly obvious observation! This team has underperformed on that end of the court all year. It is THE factor that is the difference between championship caliber and "very good." We have a very good team.

Careful with those realistic opinions and everything. Everyone knows that this team can't play D and isn't tough enough to compete, which is evident by our 10-5 record in the Big XII. I mean we pretty much handed KU (who has to play at OU) the outright title. I mean 2 weeks ago everyone on this board was talking about how IN the Big XII race we were. I can't believe that Freddy would stick to packing the paint and playing percentages and making people hit from outside as opposed to giving up the lane with a team that we all are well aware isn't a great or even good defensive team.

I agree with most here, but if a team can play that fast on offense, shouldn't they at least have a solid grasp on rotations on defense? Especially in late February? You don't have to be great on defense, but seeing it played consistently would be nice.

The issue isn't as simple as guard the 3 point line. It is about preventing dribble penetration which leads to open three point looks. This was a fluke fellas. Our defensive game plan was to help on dribble penetration and make life tough for their bigs. We did that. In fact if our offense hadn't exposed the back-end of the zone so much, Drew probably keeps Gathers in the game and doesn't end up going small. Tough to think we lose if Gathers isn't sitting from the seven to four minute. Disappointing loss but nobody is feeling sorry for us. Need to win the next two and secure 2nd place and just see where the chips fall on March 7th.

Not one. Not from Chris or anybody that writes a story about this game. ISU ****ed up. Fred and the team. Both. The loss is on Fred and the team.

Or what? I have an excuse for you, it is your fault. All you. For being such a d-bag. Because really only you would think it could be anyone but them. I am glad our team works their aas off practicing hours a day and shooting thousands of shots daily and when things don't work out and they fail you, all you csn say is it is on them? No ****. I mean I thought maybe it was you but you are right. They lost. I am sorry that they ruined your night. Because you know that is why they play. To please you. And they ****ed it all up.

Me I am going to root for them and support them like I always do because I know they are 10 times more upset than me and they actually put sweat and themselves on the line. Because it was on them.

Disagree. They have performed to their abilities on defense. We have no size, are not that quick or athletic. Defense is not just effort at this level. Good teams will exploit physical mismatches. It is no surprise we struggle against well rounded offenses.

I'll continue to root for them and be supportive. I'm just disappointed and that's ok too. There were some effort, defensive lapses, offensive execution and game plan issues that have me frustrated as a fan, but I'm not going to bash players and coaches. These things happen over a long season.

I'm enjoying the Cyclone Fanatic meltdown as it's putting my feelings in perspective, and I'll welcome all of you back on Saturday when you choose to root for the team again.

Brown liquor is helping.

Fair enough and I agree with you. I never intended to insinuate it was effort per se. We are largely undersized and help defense means rotation issues on the closeouts, especially with players like Baylor's. Matchups are everything. Monte and Naz are fairly quick though would you not agree?

Not enough to make up for team deficiencies.

Our rotations could be better, the staff has said as much. However our rotations are tested more often because physical mismatches have us plugging holes in the dam from the moment the opposition gets the ball.

Yeah, I agree with that assessment. Lack of bulk is a huge missing piece! "Plugging the dam" is a very good analogy. If I watch purely objectively (of course not always easy) it's pretty evident. A good passing team with enough low post threat and guys who can shoot the three will eventually "break the dam" by making us move/rotate. They have to nail their threes and boy did BU do that.

Splitting hairs I agree. But Gathers is just such a handful for us with his size and thats a big reason BU is scary. With that being said, OU is a tough matchup for us too. They're all tough! And our defense will tend to keep our margin of error very slim.

We had a ton of really sloppy mistakes. I counted 20 mistakes some TO some just bone headed crap that cost us a bucket.
Gathers took away the lob too and was ready for it camped.in the middle. Then they spread us on offense and we didn't counter. That white kid played for the first time in real minutes tonight. They were throwing shooters out. They were playing with house money and got out coached. It happens. Hoiberg probablynshouldnhave called a time out earlier. Hindsight is 20/20. He will be more prepared next time. Sucked that it did but it happens in sports and why KU may lose on Saturday. Pressure is a *****. Buckle up.

No doubt there were some bone headed plays too. Its basketball. There are more surprises in this conference before all is said and done I'm sure. That's why I like college basketball so much too. You just never know what might happen next, AND there are far more opportunities for redemption!

Huh? So you think we were performing up to our capabilities on defense against Oakland, Texas Tech, Southern, etc? Defense is mostly effort and discipline.

Name me a team that doesn't have those games.

And yes, even teams like Oakland and TT have physical mismatches to exploit against ISU. Oakland's center and pg could physically get to any spot they wanted. Who do we have that has the muscle needed down low? You can't just have 3 or 4 good defenders on the court in the Big 12 and get great defense.

Watch more college basketball. It is impressive we are as sufficient as we are. We are one of the least physically imposing teams.
