Scherff would be the safe pick and decent value at #11, especially if he fills a need. He could step in as a starter from day one and play well. I like Landon Collins but taking him that high feels like a bit of a reach.
I think he is the most overated projected top 10 pick in the draft. He wasn't a dominant player in the 3-4 games/yr. I've seen. Even his Iowa State games were very average.
Question for you Vikes fans - What if they get to the eleventh pick and Randy Gregory is still on the board? Do you ignore the red flags and and roll the dice on the best edge rusher in the draft? He's dropping in most mock drafts due to his off field issues at Nebraska and for being underweight. Despite all the baggage, some team in the middle of the first round is going to pull the trigger. Pass rushers are too valuable.

I think Scherff at G and as a backup LT is about as safe a pick that exists, but the question is can you get good guard play much much later in the draft? Spielman has never taken a G in the first 3 rounds iirc. Your payoff taking a G or two late and going after a more highly potential prospect might make more sense.
If lineman goes in the first 11, he should be in the All-Pro category. Scherff's a good player, not sure about an All-Pro talent.
good question. Minnesota passed on Warren Sapp back in the day because of similar concerns. Instead they got a no-name D-end who didn't pan out. I don't think Zimmer would be scared off by that baggage. He's got history with that kind of thing from his time in Cincy. We'll see, though. Boom or bust pick, imho.

What are these needs that are worse than G? Their LG spot was atrocious last year. And nothing is more important than protecting Teddy. And that lineman should be playing tackle, not guard. Too many needs IMO to draft a guard at 11.

You need too be careful taking a G this high but by no means does it make sense to rule out entire positions just because "you don't take Gs that high".
The Vikings aren't the Raiders or the Titans here. They have many crucial spots locked up and can afford to pick from wide base of players. DE, CB, ILB, WR, and S are all spots that are adequate but could easily be improved with a high pick. I'd say the only true weaknesses are OLB and G (and LT but they're not addressing that)
Well I started typing out how the OL will be serviceable this coming season but as soon as I typed Charlie Johnson and David Yankey I started laughing....
I realize the OL needs addressed...I just prefer later in the draft or via Free Agency.
Give me the best defensive player available at 11...Vic Beasley would be a dream and Trae Waynes would be more likely. IMO an edge rusher (Vic) or CB (Trae) need to be address before a guard (and thats at 11 I might add, I would feel different if we moved up or back in the 1st round).
Scherff certainly has talent to be an all pro guard. Or he wouldn't be ranked in the top 10. Guards don't go that high without that kind of talent. There's certainly less risk taking a G, but the opportunity cost could be large.
Who would you take at 11 that would be this guaranteed all pro?
