Bingo. Ready this article from last year: http://t.co/

"Hopefully I'm here a long time."

We love Fred, but those quotes will sting if he leaves.

Fred was never going to be a lifer though. We knew from the beginning that he wanted to pursue the NBA at some point. I didn't think it would be this soon necessarily but...

Also right out of that article, a quote from Jamie --

It also comes amid renewed speculation that an NBA team could come calling for Hoiberg, who played in that league 10 years and was a front office executive there for another five.“As I’ve said all along,” Pollard said, “the NBA stuff is a whole separate animal and whether he wants to coach in the NBA, which he’s never indicated to me, that’s a decision he’d have to make but he’s now paid as one of the top-10 coaches in the country so he knows what the college market is.”- See more at: http://amestrib.com/sports/men-s-basketball-hoiberg-gets-raise-isu#sthash.EmgklCm2.dpuf

This is more recent, than Jamie's announcement the other day that Fred made it very clear from day 1 that he wanted to coach in the NBA.

Thing is I don't think he would have gotten away with, "Love the new deal, but if an NBA job comes along that I like I am gone" either.

Maybe he should have just said "Thanks" and left it at that.

You are right though people hear the words, and ignore the lack of change in the buyout clause.
So I understand why they feel betrayed.

I think it's fair to say that most of the people that are upset with the fact that if he leaves, he will have only coached 4 years at ISU and people will have expected more than that. I don't think it's a suprise that he wants to coach the NBA, but the timing of the decision is very questionable.

Honestly, not that it matters but according to USA Today Fred isn't even paid in the top 20 with the new deal at $2.2m

Yes he had to say something, but to say

“I’d love to end my career here,†Hoiberg said in a phone interview with the Ames Tribune. “I’ve got something special in Ames. My kids get to see their grandparents every day if they want to, and that’s stuff you can’t replace. To look up in the crowd (during games) and there’s my parents, my in-laws, my brother, my sister-in-law, my other brother drives over from Omaha a lot, just to have that family support, you can’t replace that.“I’m very happy here. My kids love it. I’d love to spend the rest of my career here.†- “Hopefully I’m here for a long time.â€

Really gives fans a false hope.

That's why buyouts are put into contracts, and the buyout if he left for the NBA is significantly less than for another college team. If that wasn't writing on the wall then I don't know what was, and ISU agreed to it.

If.he does.come back, that needs to change. ISU needs a long term commitment or he is probably just better off going now.

That buyout is low so Fred would sign it.

Neither is WRNL. Immature article, in my opinion.

I agree. We should not be bitter. It is Fred's decision. Hope it works out. Fred might be tired of the whole recruiting thing after being rejected by Rashad Vaughn and Cheick Diallo. That part of the college game might not appeal to him.

No debating those things. On the other hand, Hoiberg signed a new contract after last season that gave him a nice raise. That contract runs through 2023. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I believe that signed contracts should mean at least something. I know that sports contracts are "unique", but ISU was offering money in exchange for stability. **IF** Hoiberg takes an NBA job, it would seem that he was happy to take the money, but had little intent of giving back the stability for which that money was given. That's why I would be very disappointed.

I like these posts that are well thought out.

It seems that with pretty much any other name, it would be more acceptable to be ticked about a jump to the NBA with what's been done, and with what's possible of happening. There seems to be a standard reservation of giving any criticism since it's Fred Hoiberg.

There will be things at the NBA level he will get tired of and not want to deal with also.

Live in Chicago, listening to Waddle and Silvy radio show on the way home from work and first postive news about Hoiberg in awhile. First, Stacey King bet the hosts dinner anywhere that Thibs will be the coach next year. Then Mark Giangreco (local sportscaster) seconded King's view, saying Thibs was at a local restaraunt and obviously didn't want to talk about it but said "that's all just talk" and followed that up with saying he is hearing how happy Fred is at Iowa State.

All day, this. The timing of it was in incredibly poor taste. WRNL is the definition of low class. Thanks for making cyclone fans look like a joke for 5 years running!

Have you seen 95% of this thread?

Would the article have been in bad taste if it was posted the day that Fred leaves? (which is 100% going to happen, by the way)
