Didn't you visit any game threads on CF? This is already happening. It's why I choose to stay as far away from CF when a game is going on as possible.

I mean "normal" fans, not CFrs. The default state of CF is freek the **** out.

Bingo.

When JP hired Fred the state of the program was an absolute dumpster fire. At that point taking a gamble on Fred was worth it. At this point the state of the program is a year in year out NCAA Tournament team and a team steadily in the top 25 rankings. Now is not the time to take a gamble on a guy with no head coaching experience... you do that when you have nothing to lose. Right now JP has everything to lose if he gambles and it blows up.

I get not wanting to take a gamble. But, how many coaches in the country would be a sure thing to keep us in the tournament year after year? Less than 10? How many of those could be hired? Zero? TJ would certainly be a gamble, but so would any other coach we hire. We are gambling with any new coach, that's why everyone wants Fred to stay.

Some of you talk about gambling with TJ like he would set the program back a decade, or turn into a Wayne Morgan hire. Even Wayne Morgan got to the NCAA tournament and the NIT in his 3 years. McDermott, with all his experience, who most would think was a sure thing, was waaaay worse than Morgan.

I hate to tell you this, but it's going to be a terrible recruiting year whether Fred stays or goes. Unless he stays and says forcefully that he's here for several years, it's not going to go well.

If he goes. We start from scratch. Even though TJ has been recruiting some guys, it's under the assumption that Fred is the HC. If that changes, so does their recruitment.

Most of the 2016 guys will be coming off the market in the next few months. Just the indecision that we're having right now, is probably reason enough for them to go in a different direction mentally as they are trying to sort out which schools make their final list.

Most HS kids will want to see what TJ can do next year, so that puts us into the 2017 class before he really has a chance.

Hopefully we can find some immediate transfers to fill in some major holes (mostly in the front court) next year, assuming there are no rule changes for grad transfers.

A lot of recruits go places to follow an assistant coach. I would say that more often than not, players have committed to ISU because of an assistant, not necessarily Fred. We saw that first hand with Darien Williams de-committing to follow Abdelmasih. If players think TJ, or Cornell Mann will be here reguardless, then Hoiberg leaving would definitely hurt recruiting, but not destroy it.

Neither of those are reasons he shouldn't be hired.

It absolutely blows my mind that fans aren't willing to give TJ a chance because he has no head coaching experience, but they LOVE Fred Hoiber, who had no coaching experience AT ALL.

NBA teams are hiring coaches frequently with no experience now. Thats the highest level of basketball, hiring guys with no coaching experience whatsoever.

99.99% of fans have NO CLUE if TJ would make a good coach or not. They don't know him personally, they don't really know what he does professionally. Pollard does.

Guess we have no choice, but I would rather have a sure thing.

1) why do people think TJ would be long term if he succeeds? He has less ties to ISU and Ames than Fred.
2) TJ is not some martyr for coming to ISU. He did it for his own selfish reasons, to get better opportunities to be a head coach than the ones he was going to interview for. He didn't do it to help ISU.

Every person in the world has less ties to ISU and Ames than Fred. However, TJ's wife has ties, so that may work in our favor. With that being said, I would be disappointed if TJ is the coach next season.

No kidding. It's insane that the people , who believe so much in Hoiberg, fail to see that he has helped mold and more than likely recommended TJ to eventually take the reigns.
Talking to the wind. Fred is a sure thing at this point for one last great run.

Matt Painter was the head coach at Southern Illinois, then came to Purdue as an assistant under Keady for a year before getting the head job so there is a precedent for hiring an outside coach in waiting too, if Pollard had a mid-major coach he liked.

You think Hornacek would do this? :jimlad:

A small bit of smoke that Fred is having second thoughts. Still think he's leaving, but it certainly isn't a "done deal" like many like to claim.

That Jives with what I just heard and is the first piece of useful info I can offer out of my way to many posts I have in this thread (1/125 ain't bad ;). This is from the only person I know who knows anything. This person is close with JW and said: 1.most of what is being reported is False 2. The rumors about him considering other opportunities are very real 3. He (Hoiberg) had felt now was a good time to hand it off but is having second thoughts because "Ames is pulling at his heart"

So basically you want to rebuild with a new coach, hoping they are FH 2.0.

Or you could keep TJ, who knows the system and might be able to maintain the brand that ISU has become known for.

Ultimately I think Fred feels comfortable leaving because he has established a brand, that sells itself, and thinks TJ is more than capable of running.

Those guys are getting hired in spite of their lack of experience, not because of. Guys like Jason Kidd and Steve Kerr can point to attributes and experience other than coaching. Surely you can see the difference between those types and TJ.

Pretty sure TJ could outcoach Derek Fischer.
