1) why do people think TJ would be long term if he succeeds? He has less ties to ISU and Ames than Fred.
2) TJ is not some martyr for coming to ISU. He did it for his own selfish reasons, to get better opportunities to be a head coach than the ones he was going to interview for. He didn't do it to help ISU.

Neither of those are reasons he shouldn't be hired.

It absolutely blows my mind that fans aren't willing to give TJ a chance because he has no head coaching experience, but they LOVE Fred Hoiber, who had no coaching experience AT ALL.

NBA teams are hiring coaches frequently with no experience now. Thats the highest level of basketball, hiring guys with no coaching experience whatsoever.

99.99% of fans have NO CLUE if TJ would make a good coach or not. They don't know him personally, they don't really know what he does professionally. Pollard does.

The idea that stepping down now rather than a year from now is better for the program doesn't make any sense to me. if you hand the team over to TJ and it turns out he isn't a good head coach and fails with a stacked team, who the heck is going to want to come play for him?

Man, I don't think I have ever seen someone whose every post i don't agree with until you ....who the hell is going to want to come here for 2016 if Fred does stay without any commitment beyond 2015 after this circus..... TJ won't fall any more on his face if he coaches next year than we did with Fred with out UAB loss.

I agree with some of what you are saying but in general, EXPERIENCE >>> NO EXPERIENCE.

If we strike out with some home run hires and end up with TJ, I think most will support that. But the thought of turning over the keys to him without even exploring what else is out there is beyond foolish in my opinion.

  1. Well he has been here longer than any MBB coach except Johnny

Adding a quick update that 2 other sources are now saying things could be hitting reverse a bit to heavily consider the TWolves opportunity for next year rather than take the Bulls this year. #1 draft pick really changed things and I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear that Fred will be back - only to have a behind the scenes "in principle" agreement to coach the TWolves next year. Mixed feelings on how that would benefit ISU given our big recruiting needs for next year.

But what about the sources that said this was done two weeks ago?

If it goes that route, you have to appoint a head coach in waiting prior to beginning this year, whether that's TJ or there is a staff shake up, that's the only way to avoid a terrible recruiting year.

What if Fred has just been on a 3 day bender and that's what he hasn't made an announcement on staying at ISU?

Man, we're all gonna have a good laugh when he gets over that hangover.

From a strictly roster point of view, I think Minnesota is a much better job than the Bulls going forward, so that makes sense.

If Hoiberg decides to stay for this season, you absolutely still keep him and hope for the best after that. I don't know how that is even a question.

Bingo.

When JP hired Fred the state of the program was an absolute dumpster fire. At that point taking a gamble on Fred was worth it. At this point the state of the program is a year in year out NCAA Tournament team and a team steadily in the top 25 rankings. Now is not the time to take a gamble on a guy with no head coaching experience... you do that when you have nothing to lose. Right now JP has everything to lose if he gambles and it blows up.

I hate to tell you this, but it's going to be a terrible recruiting year whether Fred stays or goes. Unless he stays and says forcefully that he's here for several years, it's not going to go well.

If he goes. We start from scratch. Even though TJ has been recruiting some guys, it's under the assumption that Fred is the HC. If that changes, so does their recruitment.

Most of the 2016 guys will be coming off the market in the next few months. Just the indecision that we're having right now, is probably reason enough for them to go in a different direction mentally as they are trying to sort out which schools make their final list.

Most HS kids will want to see what TJ can do next year, so that puts us into the 2017 class before he really has a chance.

Hopefully we can find some immediate transfers to fill in some major holes (mostly in the front court) next year, assuming there are no rule changes for grad transfers.

No kidding. It's insane that the people , who believe so much in Hoiberg, fail to see that he has helped mold and more than likely recommended TJ to eventually take the reigns.

Yep. If Fred is here next year and ends up going to the NBA without having a coach in waiting, our recruiting will be Iowa level bad.

Ya it hurts HS recruiting no matter what. What to do? What to do? What to do when you're Transfer U?

Matt Painter was the head coach at Southern Illinois, then came to Purdue as an assistant under Keady for a year before getting the head job so there is a precedent for hiring an outside coach in waiting too, if Pollard had a mid-major coach he liked.
