I agree with your premise that if JP agrees to this, he is agreeing to TJ as the next coach.
I do not agree that TJ would be a good choice for where we are in the program, I have stated my opinion in other posts, but if JP, who knows more than me, wants to take that risk then I will still write the checks.
Fred back for only one year is not good for the program long term and I am developing a disagreement with JP's statement that Fred has earned the right to look at NBA opportunities. If Fred's dream starts affecting my dream of a good Cyclone BB program long term, then he should go now, not next year. Starting to seem selfish on Fred's part to me.
I understand that people don't think it would be a 'sexy' hire for a coach, but when do we want to stop being a stepping stone? How do we know he's a bad coach if he's never given the chance to prove himself? It seems he has his hands all over the program doing lots of things, I think if the people in the know JP included think he's a good candidate, then I'm all for it.
I think he has the ability to be a good coach, has the ties to ISU where he could be a good long-time coach since he lacks the appeal that Fred does to go above and beyond. I think he has all the makings to build a solid program that could last for a long time.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't think it would be a terrible move. The guy has gone out of his way to help out ISU in case something were to happen to Fred, so in my eyes if he is the candidate that he's made out to be, the guy deserves a shot.
