I don't get all the heat on GMac for the players leaving. For the sake of argument, let's say GMac gets the blame for WJ and Brister. Taggart, Carr, Stinnett and DeGand left because of Morgan being fired. Stinson and Blaylock left early to go pro (smart moves, sarcasm intended) and probably partly because of Morgan's situation. CJ left to get more playing time, Vette was homesick and Jacobsen graduated early. I probably missed some, but that's 11 players, of which GMac had nothing to do with 9 of them. Plus, I would say blaming GMac for WJ is premature and I don't know enough about the Brister situation to cast blame either way.

This player turnover problem has been going on long before GMac got here. Floyd used to get criticized for "running players off". LE had a 5 or 6 man recruiting class that I seem to remember none of them ever putting on a Cyclone uniform. Right off hand, I don't remember any Morgan defections while he was here, but he wasn't here long. So, this isn't a GMac problem. I think the problem lies with the coaching carosel we've had the last 10-15 years. When a coach leaves/gets fired, players go too. If we place the ultimate responsibility for this on GMac and he is fired, many of the players he recuited will go elsewhere. If we stop the coaching carosel, we'll start to see some stability in the program and I think this will slow down dramatically.

GO CYCLONES!!!

Sounds reasonable.

I swear, it's like talking to a wall here.

Greg shares in the departure of the players that have left under his watch - he has to. At what extend, I have no idea. But to sit there and think he's completely void of blame, which you are, is completely naive.

And yet, you continue to go back to players that left before Greg arrived - or shortly after he did - which I've not once claimed he had a role in. Getting my point across to you is like trying to herd cats...

OK, now I'll play a little of your game. I never said GMac was completely devoid of blame. If you read my posts I concede that there is some culpability for Brister and WJ. So if we eliminate Taggart etc. from the conversation, that leaves Taylor, I think we agree not GMac's fault, CJ etc. all of whom seem to have reasonable reasons for leaving. I think this is a huge uproar over nothing. And before you say it, I'm not saying all the players leaving is nothing, just that GMac being the cause of it is way overblown.

GO CYCLONES!!!

We know that Tags left after McD was hired. However is it normal when you hire a coach you lose 6 players coming back? And the I'm outa three recruits? Then four more the next year. Then two more by summer the following year? Then as things should be settling down, your top assistant blows for a smaller school. Then you have people in the know telling the group that La-La Land is happening to the team. Did Loud LE lose this many players?

I think you've pointed out the major concern - that Mac was brought in to keep this stuff from happening. I think that's the biggest issue. He was supposed to stabilize the program, and has not done so.

Is Greg part of the solution? I'm not sure yet, as the departures seem to have increased since his arrival, even excluding the guys that left shortly after he arrived. As John McClain said in Die Hard, "if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem".

So far, Greg has not "solved" this issue - instead it's at least stayed the same - if not gotten worse.

I do believe Greg has to look at himself for some of this - if he's not - he's not the coach I thought he was. And I highly doubt he's sitting at home right now thinking he's without blame in these departures.

I still think the man can right the ship - I just wonder if he can do enough to get it done and do it in enough time. If someone thinks he'll keep his job at the current past of winning and player departure - they're clinically insane.

I won't lie - this latest issue has caused me to be concerned. I mean, (this is an honest question I don't know the answer to), when was the last time someone of Wesley's caliber left ISU(that wasn't a result of a coaching change)?

Well, this is going nowhere very slowly. I'd like to say we just have to agree to disagree, but I'm not sure we disagree. I name the players I think GMac could be held at least partially responsible for and those I don't think he is responsible for at all. You disagree with the ones I don't think he is responsible for, but won't say which ones you do think he is responsible for and deny that you disagree on some players because you didn't specifically mention them by name. So, at this point, all I know is that you think GMac has some culpability for some of the defections. That I agree with. If that is true then would it not be reasonable to say that he has no culpability for some of the defections?

This is gonna be my last one in this thread...as I need to get back to the cat herding...it would be more productive.

Is this so damn hard to understand???

If we agree on that, then why do you continue to claim I've never said who I feel Greg shares some of the responsibility for them leaving?

Marcus Fizer and Shane Power come to mind.
Do you consider Stinson & Blaylock due to a coaching change?

I wish you would just come out and admit that Mac has some responsibility in the matter, even though we don't really know how much.:wink:

Cyfan, please understand the word "some"....you sound like a crazy liberal right now...GMac has to take some of the blame, it's his ship that hasn't left port yet, our best player has just jumped ship....open you're eyes, there's a problem here and Mac needs to fix it.

Oh for crying out loud, why don't you just say it? You say he shares in the responsibility for "the players who left". When I said Taggart etc. were not GMac's fault, you "absolutely disagreed". So, I ask how you could blame him for Taggart etc. and you deny blaming GMac for them because "I never mentioned those players". You could have simply named the players 2 hours ago instead of being so vague as to say some responsibility for some players and some responsibility for the players who left under his watch.

One last one here as it's clearly obvious there was some "miscommunication" that took place.

Where did I disagree with you that Taggart was not Greg's fault. I don't think Taggart can be pinned on Greg, not at all.

I made it clear who I think he shares some responsibility for - the players that left under his watch. That would include WJ, CJ, Brister, Corey and the list goes on. I don't know how else you need me to say it. This is very dumb.

I have said over and over that GMac has some culpability for Brister and WJ. I happen to believe he has no culpability for the players that left because Morgan got fired. CJ etc. appear to have legit reasons that aren't coaching conflicts. I just don't believe that this is as huge a problem as most others appear to think.

That is the first time you have actually listed players. I agree with you on WJ and Brister, although it's too early on WJ to determine just how much is GMac's fault. Actually we probably will never know, but at least some is Gmac's fault. I simply don't think we can blame Gmac for CJ wanting more playing time and certainly not Jacobsen for graduating early. Vette, the kid was homesick, GMac can't be expexcted to read him a bedtime story every night. Taylor was Taylor's fault-period. I guess I'm not clear on whether you consider Carr & Stinnett to be under GMac's watch-I don't.
Believe me, I'm not trying to be a jerk here, I just don't think this is a Titanic type problem.

Show me a coach that keeps four of the eleven players he recruited, and I'll show you a bad basketball program.

Fizer, Blalock, and Stinson left to pursue professional careers - that is not even remotely similar to Wesley transferring because he didn't get along with the staff.

Correct. Blalock and Stinson were 98% gone before Mac was hired anyways.

I hope like hell that I'm wrong about this, but I don't think tomorrow's PC is going to shed any light on who should be shouldering the blame for WJ's departure.

If there is some "relationship" issue between GMac and his players, I doubt he or JP will bring it up. It will (and should be) handled internally.

GMac also won't ,IMO, throw WJ under the bus by saying WJ was all about himself and not the team/system. That won't do anyone any good in terms of rebuilding the team, recruiting, or bring the BBall family back together.

Like I said, I could be wrong and there could be a lot of information revealed. I'm normally a glass half full kind of guy, but I'm not sure where this will leave us as a fan base. Seems like most of us either want to lay the blame with GMac, WJ, or a combination of the two, and only a small few will accept the highroad spin.

Edit: I'm note sure if any of that made any sense; I'm still coming to terms with it myself :confused:
