I think rankings are wacky because juco's are more unpredictable than the top-level high school guys who play on high-level AAU teams and can be scouted and evaluated more easily. Plus they need to contribute right away to have been a "successful" recruit.

Read something but now can't find it, so recreated it myself. The following is the top 10 juco's from the 2014 class (247 Sports) and their ranking, along with how they did the following season at the school they signed at:

1. Cinmeon Bowers (4 star/96). Auburn. 30 minutes/12 points/10 rebounds
2. Kadeem Allen (4 star/93). Arizona. Red shirted/did not play.
3. Jordan Goodman (4 star/92). New Mexico. 19 minutes/13 points/6 rebounds.
4. Torian Graham (4 star/92). Houston, then Buffalo, ate marijuana at traffic stop-now ASU. Did not play LY.
5. Shane Henry (3 star/91). Va Tech. 10 minutes/2 points/3 rebounds.
6. Stephen Hurt (3 star/91). Kansas State. 13 minutes/4 points/3 rebounds.
7. Trahson Burrell (3 star/91). Memphis. 23 minutes/9 points/5 rebounds.
8. Willie Atwood (3 star/91). Arizona State. 11 minutes/3 points/2 rebounds.
9. Trey Dickerson (3 star/90). Iowa. Played minimally and left program.
10. Michael Chandler (3 star/90). Oregon. 5 minutes/2 points/1 rebound.

For perspective, Malou is a 4 star/93, ranked #2. Jackson is a 3 star/91 and ranked #7. This is a small sample, but the results are pretty consistent year-to-year.

I wouldn't call Malou a typical JUCO though. If he had gone to any prep school other than ABDC he would have been a top 50 HS kid.

4.Josh Gray PG6-1/175 91 LSU (7.5 ppm 3.4 apg)
5.Trahson Burrell SF6-7/200 91 Memphis 23 minutes/9 points/5 rebounds.
6.Gary Payton SG6-3/180 90 Oregon State 13.4ppg 7.5rpg 3.27 apg
7.Michael Chandler C6-11/240 90 Oregon 5 minutes/2 points/1 rebound.

10. Carlos Morris SG6-5/175 Minnesota 25.6 mpg 11.1ppg 3.2 rpg 2.1apg

Bolded are the ones your list excluded. Paints a different picture for sure pretty much everyone but Chandler and Allen were solid contributors (and Allen redshirted).

Are we still in on Arlando Cook?Or is taking that many jucos frowned upon in one class?Seems like a big like him would be an immediate need

I wanted Bowers. However let see how bowers does this year with all the transfer becoming eligible for Auburn. He might have inflated numbers because everyone else kind of sucked.

Got it click on composite that is usually a better indicator that's what I used.

Also interesting for 2013 Mckay a 3* and Hogue unranked also. Also in 12' #6 Marshall Henderson SG 6-2/175 0.8556 Ole Miss was a low 3* and at .85 would be the worst recruit in our class by far.

Goes to show that there are some really good Juco's and seems when it comes to Jucos the coaches have a better eye than recruiting services (likely because they have had them on campus to see how they match up with similar talent).

I think this is the case. For one thing, Juco kids don't play in 20 AAU summer events each year to be evaluated. Secondly, juco recruiting is sort of like a step-child and often gets ignored. Juco content probably isn't what the national services and reporters pay their bills with.

My link says "The list below ranks players by 247Sports Composite Rating". I was really not trying to prove anything-mostly just responding to a question as to why juco ratings are flaky with my thoughts based on an article I read a while back. The reason is that juco recruits' results are a bit flaky. My facts kind of show that. Some really good guys, some not so much.

My theory on the rankings is that it is because guys are all over the board in terms of the competition they play and thus they are harder to evaluate. Obviously, you can pick out random examples everywhere that contradict or support anything.

Agree completely. Certainly what the data shows. While I didn't set out to write a thesis on the topic. I'll use as two other examples the two 2013 5-star guys that were juco.

Chris Thomas committed to Manhattan, left the team (not sure why), then sat out a year and has been a decent player for Mike Davis, former Indiana and UAB coach. Seems to have done well there last year as their PG, but is playing at a pretty low level.

Chris Jones went to Louisville, where he was a very solid contributor as, I believe their starting PG. Averaged over 25 minutes in his 2 years there before getting charged with rape and removed from the team late last season. He was later cleared and is seeking a shot in the NBA.

You never know 'til you know, I guess.

You are right the site was loading weird. I had the 247 rankings not composite. There's really isn't too bad and actually was more accurate than composite for 2014. I didn't really have a point either was just wondering where you got your list since it came up different. There are certainly more busts in juco which makes sense as there is usually a reason they are juco. I don't recall an early signing juco in recent history that has been a bust for us though, McKay, Hogue have been gold Williams looks to be a stud for St. Johns, the kid we sent packing for Oregon when we landed Kane was decent for Oregon. The two juco's that haven't been major contributors in the last 5 years were unranked unoffered class filler projects and one Edozie really played a positive role in our success and actually helped us win some games.

Thomas tested positive for marijuana before enrolling at Manhattan signed with Marshall instead and had a good year before getting kicked off for drugs and Alcohol issues now w/Davis is doing better it seems. He was a top 10 kid out of HS but transferred HS so many times for getting kicked off teams he had to go JUCO for a year for his GED (apparently was otherwise eligible because was a 3 year juco).

Interesting. Looks like he's Canadian; we've had decent success with those guys in the past..

Here's a video that touts him as the next Carmelo! ha
