Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

My already low opinion of Jamie Pollard dropped even lower, into the gutter.

Say what you want about JP, but for me, he let two unacceptable things happen:

1.Let Cael Sanderson leave ames

2. Let Fred Hoiberg leave ames

There was a lot of talk of this same kind of behavior when Cael left Ames. Not a good thing for your AD to be known for.

True true

Well one thing sure is clear: A lot of people on this message board are really good at group think and knee-jerk reactions. Football team is 1-2? Obviously they'll win no more games! Fire the coach!

Our basketball team had to check out of a hotel by 11 a.m. to save money? Fire the AD!

Some poster says we're good at group think and knee-jerk reactions? Ban the moron!
Ban this moron!

Hoiberg won't comment for the same reasons he kept all this under his hat while he was here. He doesn't want to blow up the University.

Well...it seems to be kind of blowing up already, at least on here. If he doesn't want to blow up the university, he probably should have told the leakers to keep their mouths shut, since they are likely on his "side" of things.

Hoiberg planted all this to get JP fired and then get himself hired as AD. Thus screwing over the Bulls.

Any other conspiracies you all need me to figure out?

I hear wer'e great at conspiracies around here, lol.

there's a lot of reporters I wouldn't give any credence to in an article like this. Hines isn't one of them, I'm liable to believe everything in the article was reported accurately with high quality sources.

I think people need to understand that Fred wanted to coach in the NBA. He's an NBA guy. ISU throwing him a wad of cash MAY have bought him another year at ISU, but then what? He leaves, fans are still hurt, and by the way ISU is down an extra 3 million and has set a precedent that "you get instant success, we'll give you 5 million a year."

I wonder what Hines play is here. You don't write an article like this just for clicks

Former boss who is a big donor said they had the money to pay Fred but the donors wanted a commitment from him and Fred wasn't willing to commit to being the coach for more than a year at a time.

I think some people also underestimate how much Fred hated the babysitter role of being a college basketball coach.

I'm not sure how you are making him culpable here? Unless the leaker is him I doubt he has some newsletter for people who like him in the Athletic Department where he could tell them not to talk to reporters about it.

I don't think Hines would fabricate anything. he doesn't have to. The guy works hard and is an excellent sports reporter. i will put him up with any coverage I get from ESPN or any sports source here in Chicago.

Wow..my opinion of Pollard took a complete 180. Was the whole "Fred's dream was to always coach in the NBA" a big cover up to this? Knowing Fred, he probably knew it was in the best interest of ISU fans and the university's image to say that this is the reason why he left, not the truth (if Hine's story is accurate). This seriously could get Pollard fired if more people come forward with BS the AD has been hiding. I think Leath understands what benefits a strong athletics program has so he will make the decisions necessary for the best for ISU.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Why haven't these donors said anything? And if we have these kind of donors willing to supplement a 5 million a year contract (for how many years?) why in the hell do we struggle to even get 18 million in donations?

Donors like to have a defined purpose to give towards, simple as that.

Well...it seems to be kind of blowing up already, at least on here. If he doesn't want to blow up the university, he probably should have told the leakers to keep their mouths shut, since they are likely on his "side" of things.

Fred doesn't control those that are either at other places now or are even still in the AD.

Yep you don't F with ISU favorite sons like that..

We all know Pollard is about Directors Cup status and that is what drives him.
Don't know many alumni who are overly concerned with it, but Pollard certainly is.

Also we have the Rhoads folly that Pollard has to possibly figure out how to pay for.

This guy is starting to look like Steve Patterson

whoa.....Travis just scorched some bridges! That IS pretty bush league if its true though.

What bridges did he scorch? I'm guessing most of his sources (that remained anonymous) are now working for other universities.

Remember Wayne Morgan and the non-existent D1 scandal media "exposure" that Pollard used to fire him?

JP should be fired. I'm sure Dr Leath is thinking that given how coaching search went in men's basketball

Don't see a big deal at all with staying a few hours in the ballroom as you wait to depart to the airport.

As for other parts of the article... who knows. Sad if true. I believe Hines is a credible source, but for a big credible source to drop a story of such magnitude.....

has to be true? Right?

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Somebody tell me if I captured all the allegations

-Made to check out of a hotel at a normal time for a late flight. Which honestly seems pretty standard and I don't know why someone would expect otherwise. Maybe that isn't done for the NBA but I have zero problem with this and complaining about it seems super petty. The fact that Hines led with this, to me, diminishes the rest of the article. Makes it seem like a hit piece.
-Talking up Hoiberg's contract and making it seem larger than it was. This is a legit complaint and I could totally see it causing issues if Jamie was claiming Hoiberg was a top ten paid coach when he wasn't even in the top half of the conference.
-Shaming Hoiberg over his contract. This is a huge deal. You don't passive aggressively try to make your star employee feel bad for getting paid.
-Charging coaches families for transportation. I don't think we know enough to know if this is a "meh" or worth complaining about. Stuff like that is spelled out in contracts and coaches shouldn't automatically get to bring their families on work travel. The only reason this might be something is because people in the AD brought family members along (but that might have been part of their compensation)
-Taking away complementary tickets for assistant coaches. This is a legit complaint and the type of thing an accountant who doesn't consider the real life implications of his actions would do.
-Pressure to go away from transfers. This is a pretty big deal and would obviously cause friction. Let Me Mayor Coach?
-Not wanting to pay Hoiberg what he was worth. He's the reason you have all those new donors, Jamie. They are donating more so they can get good seats to watch Hoiball. Pay the man and don't even make him ask.

probably more of his relationship with the athletic department as a whole. if he gets his press pass pulled he's essentially be out of a job. Not sure of ISU's history with that but it's not uncommon at all.

Agree completely. Sure seems like there should be a big "To be continued..." at the end of that article.
