Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

This doesn't shock me. I've heard from numerous business owners in Ames, Boone and Ankeny, who are also significant donors and attend all the gridiron club functions, that JP comes off as the kid who was made fun of all throughout high school and never got laid. Makes him a good AD and has helped pull ISU out of the gutter in athletics, but, the jealousy piece towards Hoiberg makes all too much sense.

Re: Hoiberg and ISU admin relationship

Not sure what's wrong with that. Nobody slept on an airport floor. They had the room, woke up and checked out for a flight that day? It's what I would do and I spend money like a drunken sailor.

Because there are times when you nickel and dime and there times when you say you know what great job Fred and team, and take care of them. I can only imagine how much more merchandise ISU sold because of Fred.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Insinuating that this is why Fred left is pretty silly. I honestly don't see much here. Yes there were some mistakes but none of this leads me to believe there was a major schism between Fred and the athletic department.

JP is notoriously cheap (based on his own admission) but I agree that Fred was in the process of leaving for years. I also think you need to treat all coaches fairly but sometimes you need to treat SOME coaches EXTRA fairly. I'd hate for us to throw money around like we're big time champions, but I also know you need to spend money wisely to progress the programs whether it's flying band members to an away game or letting coaches wives come along for free.

Keep JP but make him use more of the pocketbook on programs and people!

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Former boss who is a big donor said they had the money to pay Fred but the donors wanted a commitment from him and Fred wasn't willing to commit to being the coach for more than a year at a time.

I think some people also underestimate how much Fred hated the babysitter role of being a college basketball coach.

Very consistent with what I heard on both ends. Fred did not suffer monitoring college kids well and he didn't particularly like recruiting and everything that went with it.

He was kind of tough to believe before.

True, and we'll never know the whole story. I wish he wouldn't have used anonymous sources, but if he hadn't he never would have gotten the story. Maybe when JP writes his memoir titled "Disloyal Son Forever True: How Fred Hoiberg ruined my basketball program," and Fred writes his called "I'm better than Phil Jackson: How Jamie Pollard ****** me off enough that I won NBA titles instead of college titles" we'll know the whole story.

And I'm well aware that those are great both book names.

Hines will be on KXnO at 4:30 today, definitely going to be worth the listen.

That article does not benefit Hoiberg, Pollard, ISU athletics or the current mens team. Unless one of the unamed sources, Hoiberg or Pollard wants to go on record l will take it as rumors.

My angst will be directed towards Hines for writing an article that is based on hearsay. Seems like a really stupid time to write this article. If it was such a big deal why not write it while Fred was here or right after he left.

Perhaps Cael Sanderson left for similar reasons

Yeah but I don't blame him so much for that. Especially at that point in time, you couldn't throw a bunch of money at a program that has a financial upside of not losing as much if they're good.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

He kind of danced around it, but the impression I got wasn't that they were made to sleep on the floor of a hotel lobby for a night or something like that. The impression I got was that the return flight was a late afternoon or evening flight and the AD made them check out that morning rather than pay for an extra night when they only needed it for a few hours and the players spent the afternoon lounging around the hotel with their luggage.

I'm not defending it, I just think Hines intentionally left that vague.

This is a good example of why our football program will always be second tier. Meanwhile, if this was after an Alabama football game they would have provided their athletes with suites, $100 under the pillow and would have hookers waiting on the bed for their arrival.

You would do that. But if you played basketball for Iowa State and brought an incredible amount of success to the university, I would expect Iowa State to provide you with proper accommodation in this situation.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why people are giving props to Hines for writing this...
1- It isn't good for Iowa State
2- He doesn't list any actual sources
3- It's almost 4 months after Fred left

But hey, people will believe anything they read on the internet....

I've supported Pollard through and through while listening, and understanding, others arguments for him to go. If this is true, he needs to be canned.

Yup, there's a difference between spending and investing.

Because he's exposing some embarrassing things about our university which need to fixed?

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

This isn't about making a team check out of a hotel early, it's about not giving coaches/staff the available resources they want/need. If Hoiberg and the basketball program said these were issues, why not give it to them? We are talking thousands of dollars here, not millions. You want to keep your top performing employees happy (within reason), not nickel and dime them on things that are insignificant in the overall budget.

With Pollard's ego, is anyone really surprised he would be jealous of Fred's success and the attention it got?

I need to know what "hours" is before I'm going off on this. I mean, did they sit there from 11 to 7 or was it 11 to 3? I'm not going to blame an idea for not wanting to spend money for four hours worth of time but it would be ridiculous if it was 8 hours or something.

Do the words "appearance of impropriety" ring a bell, Jamie?

1) He's not a cyclones.com writer
2) B/c if he listed the names of the people who gave him info, on terms of anonymity, he'd likely be dead by sunset.
3) Very likely these folks didn't come forward or offer info til recently. And it takes a while to put this type of stuff together.
