Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

It doesn't really matter what the actual deal was with the hotel rooms/ball room......so for everyone trying to make it out like it was not such a big deal, or is exaggerated in the story......it doesn't matter. People outside ISU will read a whole lot more into than even ISU fans, and won't analyze it or try to justify it to the degree that we might. They will just see the ISU administration as being cheap.....even with one of the most successful programs they have had in years....case in point, look at this re-tweet by Andy Katz.....probably one of the most respected journalists involved with MBB.....then try an convince us this is no big deal.

this is exactly why we are so upset by this story. His story obviously has holes in it, which have been discussed here, with no name sources , and now is being smeared everywhere by national media dragging our program through the mud.

Exactly. From my perspective, the problem with this story is that people will only read the headline, or another reporter's brief tweet of a "key fact" of the story, and misconstrue it. The article didn't make it clear that the Cyclones stayed another night in the hotel. Rather, I'm guessing, they probably flew out of Hawaii at 11 p.m. (I've had two flights out of Hawaii before late at night - Lihue and Maui), while check out time is at 12 p.m. or something like that. Thus, the guys sat around in the hotel ballroom while waiting for their flight. At least, this is my hope.

Again, it's not clear from the article and the multiple levels of interpretation and hearsay (like what Katz is tweeting about) will simplify the story and condense it into a tiny little tweet or point which will hurt ISU. Exhibit A: his tweet that the players had to sleep in a hotel ballroom. It's not clear that they actually spent an overnight in the hotel ballroom. What if they left at 1 a.m.?

Still, interesting story regardless. Hope it doesn't hurt recruiting by blowing into a national story.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

He kind of danced around it, but the impression I got wasn't that they were made to sleep on the floor of a hotel lobby for a night or something like that. The impression I got was that the return flight was a late afternoon or evening flight and the AD made them check out that morning rather than pay for an extra night when they only needed it for a few hours and the players spent the afternoon lounging around the hotel with their luggage.

I'm not defending it, I just think Hines intentionally left that vague.

Why not check your luggage and go to the beach?

So let's live in a world where this story is complete BS for a minute, why wouldn't Pollard respond to Hines to clear up the misinformation rather than wait for it to be published and become a negative talking point about the program?

Quick hits:

Pollard says families have never been charged tickets ever and you could easily verify that by calling the basketball office.

Pollard says checkout was at noon and flight at 6:00. He applauded the move to save $25,000 for 3 hours of time.

Pollard says Travis approached him on the day the article was to be written.

What are the holes? I didn't catch them my first read through the article and I don't want to read through 23 pages.

lol, so Hines led the story with a complaint that the AD should have spent thousands of dollars so the players/coaches wouldn't have to kill maybe 3 hours before heading to the airport? And this is going national as the AD made them "sleep in a hotel ballroom"?

I think Hines probably had some legitimate points. But come the **** on. He deserves the bridges he burned on this.

JP just said Hines asked him the day he was gonig to publish it. AKA - story had been 99% written already.

Who knows...truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
