Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

1.it isnt good for iowa state for these things to be occurring in the first place. if it causes a change in behavior, it IS good for iowa state
2. Any sources relating to this wouldnt be sources very long if they were named. I mean if any of them are upper level staff, they'd be risking their jobs if their names were on this.
3. Maybe it just took awhile to talk to enough people to feel confident in writing this story.

This the standard is multiple sources if unnamed and confirmed by an editor. Hines made a point in saying he had nearly nearly 10 that had intimate knowledge and they are a real newspaper. This is legit folks.

Hines on KXNO right now with CW and Siepker:

He worked 4-5 months on this story, starting in May. He wanted to finish by the end of August but it took longer than he anticipated and he just finished this morning.

He called Fred on Friday and texted him earlier this week to seek comment with no response.

He asked for an interview with JP on Monday and the AD's office passed; he also asked them to respond to written questions on Monday instead and they declined.

He kind of danced around whether or not he talked to Fred at all; just said they they never spoke for comment (may have spoken off the record).

He just danced around that issue a second time; it seems obvious that Hines and Fred spoke off the record now. Quote was similar to "I was unable to reach Fred for comment; I was unable to talk to Fred for comment."

Everything in the story is attributable to multiple sources.

They could have kept a couple of rooms and piled the tired boys in there for an afternoon.

Also someone reported earlier in this thread that CFH said they went swimming. That seems harsh.

Someone is lying. Either Fred told him not to run the story. Or Fred didn't get back to Hines as Hines states.

I would have to side with Fred on this one. Hines nervously answered the question from Chris Williams.

I find it funny that people believed Pollard is "cheap". Probably the same people who complain about the long expensive contract he gave Rhoads. He also gave Hoiberg multiple raises and has spent how many millions of dollars on facility upgrades? Baffling how anyone could call him cheap.

Now that I've listened to everyone I think it's somewhere in the middle.

I think JP could have stopped this story by meeting with Hines and he could have met with him before Wednesday morning.

Chris doing a good job asking fair questions. I credit Travis for standing by his work, but I would agree I think he's being a bit misled. As with all things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

This shouldn't deter Travis from being a great reporter on Men's hoops and recruting.

I think it's completely possible that Fred told Hines not to run the story and if he did, Fred would not support it, because it would hurt the university and the basketball program.

CW, why would you not ask specifics? Like how JP refuted the assistant coach ticket thing? Seems that would be really easy to verify and both JP and FH said it was untrue.

Thought that was telling as well. Hines sounds shaky.

Travis completely stands by it. One side is definitely a liar.

I'm sure much of the friction Hines wrote about is true; I'm also sure pretty much every basketball program in the NCAA has similar kinds of friction with theirAD. People complain about their bosses all the time. This is news?

I think Hines stands by "fred didn't respond on the record".. I'd bet money Hoiberg told him, off the record, don't run the story, it is false.
