Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I have a problem with presenting what un-named sources tell you as fact.......when you do not take the time to get a response to the claims, or verify the so-called "facts" in some way. I think a story like this needs to include both sides of the story, and the responses of people on both sides of it, and it did not. If you can't do that......then I think you really have to strongly consider not running the story since you are presenting it from only one side, and all of your sources are un-identified. It's just poor journalism and probably belongs in the rags that are sold at the grocery check-out line.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I believe the story. The only think that is strange is this. Hoiberg makes 2.2 million dollars a year. The conditions were so bad that he could not pony up 5k to get his guys hotel rooms on his own dime and then take it up with the administration when he got home? I dont get that. The story sucks on all parts and is bad for pollard and ISU. Hate hearing this stuff.
Isn't that considering giving gifts to your players? Also, this sounds like it was blown out of proportion. It was for a few hours, not a whole day. That's being smart and staying within an athletic budget.

Yeah me either, because Fred has always been so forthright and honest (I want to end my career at ISU, I love Ames and ISU, and I have the perfect situation here in Ames). Did I remember them all correctly?

Yes. I think we know he loves Ames and ISU.

So what in your interpretation are Scott and CW saying happened? Sorry, I don't have access to KXNO (not online either)

Briefly -- Travis did talk to Fred, but it was off the record.

I'm going to wait to place blame until it soaks in a bit or until more info comes out. I like JP, I love Fred, and have no opinion of Hines. Pollard has done wonderful things financially while at ISU. Fred has done wonderful things at ISU. Sounds like there were differing views from the AD and Hoiberg as to what was the best way to do things, but I don't think it resulted in Fred going to the Bulls. Fred couldn't have felt unwanted...could he? Not seeing eye-to-eye and feeling unwanted are 2 different things. We will see what's what in the next few days or weeks.

Or on Fox News, or on CNN, or on any other media source that regularly shows a bias towards one side of the story (aka all of them)

I will say that I have never heard any rumblings or complaints about JP not wanting to go the transfer route any longer. It's possible he made a remark about ensuring we went after good kids that need a good situation and not just take rejects, but don't see that he would have been any more involved than that in that particular thing.

Usually when you decline to comment you're guilty of something. He was hoping it wouldn't get published and of course he's going to deny it after it is.
No that's not at all what it means.

I think that there is probably some truth to the story, but Travis killed a lot of credibility by overstating the stupid hotel ****.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I don't agree here. I think he clearly did. But I think his examples were sensationalized and blown out of proportion.

Do I think there was some tension between JP and Fred when Fred wanted another 20% raise? Yep. That happens in business all of the time. Employers want to pay employees as little as possible. Employees want as much money as possible.

The only place Hines reporting could have been so much better is the ballroom floor story. How did he not verify this was only a few hours? That was everyone's first question here when they read it. Unless he did and choose to run with the sensationalization. Then THAT is bad reporting.

All in all, there are tensions and disagrements with everyone and their jobs and bosses. I have no doubt there were between Fred and JP at times. It's impossible at their level. But I think the story is/was blown out of proportion.

He could have easily verified the coaches tickets and the coaches travel to the NCAA tourny. So he fell short on those two parts.

Was the off the record stuff only Fred telling Travis not to run the story?

Essentially the entire premise of the story STARTED with this ballroom story. And to have the opening argument torpedoed... I could care less about the rest of the article thereafter. It's all overblown BS from that point on.

To me, he didn't do his homework on much of it (coach game tickets, circumstances of ball room event, transfers, etc), he only appears to have gone for comments at the very end of his story instead of using them as part of his fact finding.

There was absolutely tension between JP and many people and he has made many donors very upset, but the actual examples used in the story would have been pretty easy to vet with other existing faculty and sources. I've heard many stories that could be used as examples, but only a fraction would be irrefutable facts based on hard evidence.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

The whole story cites unnamed sources with hard hitting quotes such as

"If Jamie would have handled things differently, "another source told the Ames Tribune, "I'm not so sure Fred would have left."
Really? "Not so sure Fred would have left." Well if that doesn't scream credibility I dont know what does.

What a joker. A sad piece of wannabe investigative journalism.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Here's the thing on Fred's raises. According to the story, Fred wanted the raises but didn't want people to think he wanted the raises. That's just stupid too. And frankly, I think Fred deserved as much as he wanted, he needed to make a long-term commitment to Iowa State and he refused to do that. He was shopping around for jobs every ******* year.

I know for a fact that Holberg used the U of Minnesota job as leverage to get a bigger contract in 2013.

So even though it was all fairly well shot down you still want to keep the option of hating JP open?
