Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

True or not, how does Hines expect to continue to work in Ames? He would have to have an exit strategy right? Nobody in the AD is going to willfully give him info anymore.
I hate the article and it may have caused some damage to the program nationally (probably very insignificant), but I hope it doesn't mean we don't get Hines reporting on ISU anymore. One bad article shouldn't make a journalist. Especially after all the awesome material he's provided us for hoops and recruiting.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Here's the thing on Fred's raises. According to the story, Fred wanted the raises but didn't want people to think he wanted the raises. That's just stupid too. And frankly, I think Fred deserved as much as he wanted, he needed to make a long-term commitment to Iowa State and he refused to do that. He was shopping around for jobs every ******* year.

It's sad that he had to to get the raises he more than deserved and was still very underpaid even after them, but was taking jabs from JP for getting them.

People are way too hung up on the hotel part, that's the least important part of the article.

Alright, Hines. ISU needs 5 conference wins to keep his job.

You need to do something equally spectacular for Iowa State to keep yours.

So my 2 main questions after reading that article by Hines is 1. What is his purpose for writing that at this time and 2. Why would Hines need to make up a story like this if some or all of it wasn't true. I'm completely blown away. I know that Hoiberg is denying all of it because he has to. And for Pollard, if any of this is true dude needs to be shown the door.

Still don't get the hoiberg calling him and not willing to go on the record. Does he say don't publish it or I will publicaly say its crap, but it's true - and I will never publicaly admit it

That's part that doesn't make sense to me.....FH tells JP what he wants to hear but secretly he hated him, but knows for his reputation and being Ames golden child he takes the high road.

You really wonder what Hines' motive would be to sensationalize a story? He's auditioning for other jobs. He thinks covering college basketball at Iowa State is beneath him and this is the type of story that will be his ticket out of Ames. So he went to the people who wanted to sell him some sour grapes (Cornell Mann/Matt A).

There's obviously plenty of truth. Pollard was given plenty of opportunities in advance of the story to respond. If he had, the story is different if published at all. But he chooses to blow Hines off instead. Story published and he takes to Twitter to attack the writer. Embarrassing. Some of the sources were big donors who I doubt will just sit quietly.

It's pretty normal for sources to have conversations off the record that they don't want getting out. It's also normal for journalists to honor that so they can keep getting that information. It's also very normal for sources like donors and current assistants to want to be anonymous so they don't get shut out or fired.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

It's really troubling that people would actually believe Hines made this up and there's no truth to it. The Tribune wouldn't let him publish this without some very credible sources.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Yeah Pollard should have responded to the article piece by piece with explanation PRIOR to publication. Instead he chose to not comment, and respond piece by piece after, and in the process make Hines look bad. But in the process Iowa State was made to look bad, thanks to JP's ego. Not condoning Hines' article, but JP could have handled this differently.

Was the off the record stuff only Fred telling Travis not to run the story?

For all we know he said yeah, jamie annoyed the **** out of me but I am not going to say that nor should yo. Please don't run the story. If you do I will deny so no I will not comment.

Part 1: LARGE group of people read a POORLY written "article" which reinforced some people's opinion of JP and immediately called for his firing.

Part 2: Several reasonable posters took a wait and see approach and opined something seemed a little odd but pitchforks were drawn.

Part 3: JP pulled a PR stunt and went on the radio. Pitchforkers said it was only to save his bacon.

Part 4: Fred called in from Bulls camp and refuted point by point the entire article.

Part 5: Pitchfokers said of COURSE JP and Fred would do that and they were probably lying while the anonymous sources were gospel.

Part 6: Everyone feels kind of dirty and the JP haters till hate, the Fred lovers still love and Hines needs to win 5 more football games or he's fired.

It also seems "professional" to make sure your story is tight prior to print. "Hey I heard you beat your wife. Any comment? Nope? Well there you have it folks. He doesn't deny beating his wife. Where's my ESPY?"
