where do you feel (if paul was fired) that ISU resides in the pecking order of current and forseen openings at the end of the yr?

these are the ones I know of and the ones I think could happen

Illinois, Maryland, Purdue, Usc east, USC, Miami FL, arkansas, north texas, houston (assuming herman leaves), VaTech (retire), Virginia, UCF, Memphis (fuente leaves), rutgers, New Mex St, and I know there are others but cant think of anymore likely ones.

Maybe, maybe, JUST above NM St. every other one of those (yes, even North Texas) is above ISU at this point.

I know some of you think you're being "realists" or "just saying it how it is" by saying Iowa state sucks, but you're really not.

Iowa state isn't a great job in the power 5 conferences, but it's still better than some other power five jobs, and you're insane if you think nt or nmsu are even close to being as good.

We are ranking pecking order morons..... Wow, I am tired of people on here.... Recent success (or lack there of does have something to do with this), but we have some pretty great facilities in a great administration. Anyone who is ranking the Purdue's, Rutgers, Maryland, Houston, and North Texas ahead of us has ***** for brains..... and should go hang themselves right now because any offspring would just ruin mankind.....

Houston is a better job than ISU

Purdue/Maryland are better jobs than ISU

we would be above New Mexico and North Texas

This is exactly where I am. I look at our facilities and fan support and think, "If a great 'up-and-comer' has offers from Purdue, Md, Rutgers or Iowa State - it seems we would be at the top of that list." However, recruiting to those B1G schools should be much easier than recruiting to Iowa State when our biggest talent pool is in the state of Texas - and half the conference teams are located in, or very near to, that state. I keep hoping that the $$ we have sunk into FB facilities and the stadium will entice a top notch coaching staff (if Rhoads is gone after this season) - only time will tell.

I would imagine roughly the same level as Purdue although I would personally rather coach at Purdue. The schedule year after year would be more favorable, plus I couldn't tolerate working for Jamie Pollard.
I would agree with you mostly, but if you really want to go to a school that nickels and dimes their football program it would be Purdue, but you do have an easier schedule and a little bit more tradition.

USC, South Carolina, VT, Arkansas and Miami are all attractive to coaches for varying reasons. Houston is a nice option for a young coach. Maryland has been good in the past, so I'd put them above ISU. I'd say we're on roughly the same level as Illinois and Purdue. Rutgers, NMSU, and North Texas are lower-- and depending on the specific coach we might be ahead of or behind Houston.

Well Illinios will probably hire their interim coach and Arkansas? Really? Bielema isnt going anywhere.

You know what I'm tired of? Telling people to go commit suicide. Well done.

I was being only slightly facetious (it means joking, since I'm not sure you would know that), but for real? Both USC's, Miami, Arkansas, both Virginias, and UCF are EASILY better jobs. For a variety of reasons. Give me ANY way that ISU is better than those 7....

Houston is also a far better job than ISU. They have some of the best prep talent in the country right in their back yard, like literally, there are kids that can see campus from their house. They are also investing a TON of money in facilities, in anticipation of the next round of conference realignment.
Purdue, Rutgers, and Maryland have all been to bowls more recently than ISU, and Rutgers and Maryland have been to consecutive bowls (Rutgers 7 straight, Maryland 3 straight). Maryland also has something that kids today enjoy, multiple uniform combos coming straight from Under Armour. Give me one reason those are not better options at this point?

That leaves us with Illinois, Memphis, New Mexico State, North Texas and I'll include Purdue here just because. I don't actually feel like going through and ranking these, so I'll just throw them into groups:
1) Illinois, Purdue, ISU
2) New Mexico State, North Texas

So, I wasn't that far off in my original assessment.

TL;DR version, specifically for jburke:

Really??? From an easy of recruiting I would agree with Houston, but we are in the Big 12 and Houston is in AAC or whatever they call it now....

Purdue and Maryland has a little more tradition than us, but are not in any better state than us. I think we are on the same level.....

look at the money the athletic dept brings in, very low. also look at our record, very bad. time to revamp the coaches and team to the high level we have in facilities and fans. we built it, time for them to come.

NMSU and North Texas are clearly at the bottom by a long ways. I'd put Rutgers third to last. That whole athletic department is a dumpster fire right now. Then I'd put ISU and Purdue next. After that would be Illinois and Maryland as they have some inherent advantages that ISU and Purdue simply don't. I would also put Houston in that tier. Great location, history of success, and shown to be a springboard for good up and coming coaches. The top teams of the ones mentioned by OP are pretty obvious.

I'm sorry, but I'd put ISU squarely at the bottom. There are probably FCS level coaches who would laugh at this job. Hate to say it but it's true.

Absolutely ridiculous. ISU isn't at or even near the top, but they aren't near the bottom either.

NMSU hasn't been to a bowl game since the mid 70's, so that right there tells you all you need to know about them. Well that and have you ever visited the campus down there? Absolutely u-g-l-y, everything painted tan, brown grass, dirty... Ames >>>>>>> Las Cruces.

UNT has one of the worst ADs in the NCAA. Villarreal is JP without the people skills. Brand new stadium and 0 wins, 1 winning seasons in the last 9, and that is against weak opponents along with being able to recruit from the home state of Texas.

Rutgers is more of a dumpster fire than ISU is right now. Player criminal problems, player academic problems, athletic department with total lack of control....Their one upside is that they can recruit out of an area that isn't really touched by a lot of teams.

Houston is probably higher on my list than a lot of other peoples. They have a proven record of coaches jumping from there to a good position elsewhere. They recruit good athletes from the home state of Texas, having actually stolen a couple off of Big12 boards the last couple of years. Their downsides are, small stadium, small student population, and facilities that aren't up to a lot of other schools.
