You know what the bad thing is....if Sturdy gets the offense going Rhoads can use, "It was Mangino's fault" and stay another year.

Neither one has been good. But the offense has been far more the problem than the defense.

And it's been like this all 3 previous OC's. Herman (considered an offensive genius), Mangino (once thought of as an offensive genius), and Mess (pretty much always considered a mess).

The common denominator might be Paul.

Let's hope Lazard pulls together a "players only meeting" and keep these guys united. Need the team to stick together now, more than ever.

And if he doesn't get the offense going, Rhoads can use "you can't expect him to build his offense in 5 weeks", and stay another year.

Let's see how these changes play out

I've heard plenty of stories about Mangino and his relationships with players and coaches from KU insiders. He had real issues. That's an understatement.

Rhoads is trying to make positive changes with the roster and staff. I think he's earned the right to have support from fans to see how the rest of the season develops. I still think he's the best answer for this program long term.

If you actually listen to Rhoads' presser it sounds like he didn't really want things to go down this way. My guess is that Mangino quit.

I think this is good news. Mangino is not the sole problem, but he hasn't done anything good here either.

I also think this means we look like a power football running team with Lanning at the QB going forward, vs sideways passes and trying to do a spread passing offense with SR. That's what I get from reading between the lines.

It is hard to get all the players together to tell them the news in a way that doesn't let it leak to the media. This decision was probably made late yesterday or this morning. With the exception of calling a team meeting before the presser (which would conflict with classes, other schedules, etc) it would be difficult to do. IDK if you can really blame Rhoads for that.

Overall I like this move.

I think Sturdy is more of a down-field passing guy too. He has some P5 experience and has had success.

If we see more of what we were starting to see at Baylor on BOTH sides of the ball I am encouraged.

Let just hope Rhoads' path is the one that is best for the team. And that Mangino's was the wrong one. Time will tell

Yes, Paul could be the problem. He's likely going to his job. But let's not act like what Mangino was doing was working. Now maybe it was because Rhoads was doing what he wanted to and Mangino wasn't. Or maybe Mangino was doing what he wanted and Rhoads wasn't. Does it matter? As head coach for the next 2 months, Paul can do what ever the hell he wants to.

Exactly, his job is on the line. He isn't going to go down without a fight and with an offensive philosophy he doesn't agree with.

Mangino was on the forefront of the spread/air raid/high tempo type offenses and it worked. He was out of the game for a while and everyone else caught up/caught on and now his style is very mainstream and easy to prepare for.

Herman was a flop here and a legitimate example for your argument.

Messingham was a joke who should have never been hired.

2/3 I don't think are 100% "wow that guy is awesome and CPR screwed him up"

No way anyone will buy that. WHO hired Mangino? Rhoads.

His team, his staff. His fault one way or another.

I don't totally get the hate for Mangino. Over the past 5 games, we have averaged 470 some yards, so its not like we are not moving the ball. Our biggest problem has been scoring in the red zone. Everything else on offense has been in place. Currently we are ranked 50th in the nation in passing and 56th in rushing, which are probably the best rankings nationally we have had since Rhoads has gotten here. And I think these rankings will improve as the season goes on.

Now CPR can point to Mangino as an excuse to try to save his job.
If he wins six he keeps his job, if he wins five he might keep his job(I doubt it), if he wins four he is done. This change doesn't affect that one bit and firing your third OC midseason does not allow you to keep your job. I f anything it hurts unless you are successful.
