We have one potential stud WR
Bundrage is a stud. Wesley can make plays. Montgomery can be a load. Daley is servicable. The wide receivers are excellent. the qb totally could not thow. We have studs who have a hard time catching the ball two feet in their back

They don't all lift at the same time. it is staggered throughout the day with the first group being at 6 AM (before this happened).

Oh, you mean the coaches can't just snap their fingers and have all 125 players, coaches, managers, etc drop what they are doing and show up in 10 minutes for a meeting where Paul tells them the news?

Take this for what it's worth, but I have heard about Rhoads-Mangino tension from someone close to the program almost since Mangino's first day in Ames. That hire seriously escalated the behind-the-scenes dysfunction.

I think Rhoads knows that his ship is sinking. He's putting it all on 7 Red and letting it ride for one last spin around the roulette wheel to see if somehow his job can be saved. If not, at least he will go out his way. For someone who has wanted Rhoads gone for a long time, I respect that.

Completely agree with this.

Maybe trying to tell the players first would have been a better plan, but things don't always go down the way you want. It sounds like this happened literally within a couple of hours before the press conference, so he didn't have much time to choose a course. May have made a mistake, but it's not one that I'm going to kill him over.

How the players respond will be the ultimate test.

Does anyone know how much involvement Rhoads has ever had with the offense? Being a defensive guy, I would assume he's never had a huge involvement on that side, despite rumors to the contrary. Maybe seeing the writing on the wall, he just wants to truly try it his way one time before he's canned.

And as far as "firing his potential replacement", there would still be nothing preventing Pollard from hiring Mangino at the end of the season.

So many people on here need to do some critical thinking before just typing the first thing that comes to their mind. It might help if they actually read the posts previous to theirs as many people have made opinions that are foolish in light of information that has already been posted.

But hey, this is an internet forum, so uh, just carry on.

OK, now for my wonton speculation. Sam is running Mangino's package. Lanning is running Sturdy's. Sturdy's is working better, and probably because of the QB position. Rhoads makes Lanning starter, Mangino doesn't want to run someone else's Offense, and sayw, "Why am I here?" CPR says, "Not sure." Mangino says let's part ways and they decide it.

I think that Mangino's Offense would work if we had a QB capable of running it. Apparently we don't.

I will say that Blaney has done an outstanding job so I hope that he is able to maintain along with Tommy M.

Thanks a bunch, now I got to go out for chinese.

So media and spin > players. :realmad:

Do we even know that the players would be/are upset about this? I feel like people are just trying to find flaws in everything that CPR does right now. I want him gone as well, but I don't see any problem with how he handled this.

Thanks for explaining that. Does anybody know what other schools usually do in these situations? I just feel like some attempt to text them would have bee worth it, but maybe I'm wrong.

Based on when it happened when I was playing we were told after the fact in a team meeting. For example when Rhoads left ISU to go be the DC at Pitt, it was widely reported before we had a meeting to inform us.

That is exactly what they want us to think the situation was. Based on the way Rhoads has acted and his statements related to Lanning, I can't believe that is true.

It actually makes the most sense that it is true. Rhoads covering for his OC that wants to continue with Sam after the TCU game. Rhoads finally tells Mangino to start Lanning in the second half. Lanning does well. Rhoads wants to go with him moving forward, Mangino doesn't.

Chances are Rhoads and Mangino had this out and there was damage control to be done. Rhoads probably didnt have a chance to say anything to the players. My guess is this wasnt done with ease and amicability.

This. I don't like either guy but can easily picture Mangino telling Paul to go **** himself based on Manginos history.

He is owning his decision.....

I do think there was a change to the play-calling and Mangino too offense and resigned..... Talking about that piece early he mentioned about making a change to offensive side and that was not accepted by Mark....

the way it was phrased for me "good message" instead of just "message" makes me wonder whether MM has issues with players?

How would you have handled this situation if you were in CPR's shoes?

Well I'm assuming it just happened this morning and took him by surprise. So assuming that and knowing that he has a press conference scheduled later today I think it's fair that he should expect to be asked about the direction of the offense (even if the news hadn't leaked by then) so I'd have done the following.

1) postpone the press conference until after meeting with the team so he could speak with the players. Obviously this would raise a red flag to the media members who usually cover this and the cat would be out of the bag if it hadn't been previously

2) send out a text or email to players telling them the news and telling them that they'd answer any questions when they got together later in the day.

Way up there

This move happened too late but I agree, going back to KU, Mangino had an arrogance about him. Until now it seemed CPR had stayed out of way and let him run the offense. The recent QB stuff must have finally pushed it over the edge. If MM was the guy sticking with Sam, this seems like the appropriate move. He clearly dropped the ball, potentially costing CPR his job. Makes sense why CPR was as confused as the rest of us as to why Lanning didn't play the last 3 qtrs. against TCU.

As someone who's had faith in CPR, even during the past few years, I hope this season ends with clarity. Either this team turns it around and goes to a bowl game, OR we finish at 2-10 or 3-9. In the first scenario, the team finishes this season 4-1 and saves CPR's job at least temporarily. In the second scenario I think even CPR's most passionate supporters would have to say buh bye.
