Pretty much our entire offense from last year returned this year. How has that worked out?

The first 1,000 yard rusher since Alexander Robinson. Unfortunately we've been sacked more this year, but I'm convinced that has more to do with our quarterbacks being unaware of when to throw it away.

Speaking of sacks, the defense has destroyed last year's total of 15. We're at 26 with two games to go. Pierson's production may be hard to replace, but between the returners and a couple JC signings, not out of the question.

So... the big question is what does last year look like if Rhoads doesn't have the gonads to kick two NFL caliber players off the team for being idiots. ISU has to ask if a few more wins are worth keeping bad eggs around or if the integrity of the program is more important. Personally, I respect a team or a coach that says to these guys, your so detrimental to the team that we would rather lose without you than win with you. When Rhoads kicked them off the team he had to know what it meant for his win loss record.

I said that he would likely need 5 wins. Maybe 4 wins depending on how competitive we are. No doubt we have been competitive. Not sure if Pollard gives CPR a mulligan on the Toledo loss since the chip shot FG should not have been missed IMO. And it all depends on how Pollard views the Okie State game. The Mark Mangino firing might benefit CPR as well. The team has looked pretty decent in the last 3 games.

At times, yes. But there's still the Tech game, the first half of the Baylor game, OU 2nd half, and having this past weekend's loss look all too familiar that keep me from really believing that there's been some sort of corner turned.

There is flashes though.

Not trying to rain on your parade but I'm not sure the progress you've mentioned constitutes a bright side. We're going to finish 3-9 so the thing that counts, our record, is making no progress.

Does the fact that some people survived the Titanic constitute a "bright side"?
I still think ISU wins out and the attitude above is really what has people ****** off. How one can say the current staff/players we are using now isn't far superior to when we started the year is lying to themselves.
5-7 would not make me happy but it would give me confidence for next year as most of the playmakers return.

Far more consistency since Lanning took over. The guy still needs to be consistent n the pocket but he can use what works till the offseason and work on pocket passing in the spring.

Both players were inconsistent and imo Irving played lazy, and there's proof in that if he wasn't completely dominant in college but is making contributions this early in his NFL career. It's another 'dead horse' discussion, but I just don't see how the W-L record changes much with those two since the offense was still bad and long pass plays have been a big weakness the whole time.

If we win out, Rhoads will likely stay.

But we haven't won a road conference game in almost 2 years, hard to believe we will win 2 in a row...

Agree here...there at least seems to be some sort of identity and chance for the defense to get some rest.

My problem is that this feels like the first time under CPR that there's an identity on offense.

Am I the only one that has seen improvement since Lanning became the starting quarterback and Mangino was let go? I see improvement on both sides of the ball. We have the first 1,000 yard rusher since ARob. We have a mobile quarterback that rushed for over 100 yards last game. We held the 8th ranked team in the nation to 34 points, and oh did I forget, we led the game except for the last 5 minutes. All I see are people bad mouthing a coaching staff that is trying to get things going in a positive direction. I see people bad mouthing our players and saying they are not good enough to get wins. This is Iowa State, we are not Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, or even this year (I hate to say it) Iowa. We are a work in progress and I am satisfied that things are moving in the right direction. If we pick up a few good JUCO players to fill a few holes for next year, we have a good core of returning players that can win.

We have played 28 quarters of big 12 football. Lanning has played the last 14 in which we have outscored opponents (Baylor, Texas, OU, OSU) 99-97. Compare that to our performance in the first 14 quarters where we were outscored 90-159 (VS. KU, Texas Tech, TCU and BU). The last 14 is easily the tougher 14 imo, and you get your answer pretty definitively.

So you want argue about losing close games but don't want to acknowledge that two solid defensive linemen being dismissed could have possibly turned a couple of close losses into wins.

I want to do this before someone does it seriously:
"Good riddance. We only want the true fans, the ones who stick through thick and thin and don't care about the record. We care about supporting the program instead."

Never mind the realities there. ISU fans have this perverse pride in sticking through seasons that we shouldn't have to be sitting through., year after year, as though supporting losing makes us better fans and people.

So, good riddance and stuff, or something.

How dare you!!!

Sam Richardson was the QB for most of the year

Yes he was, and that is on CPR.

Guess what, everyone was crazy over Richardson after his first few starts, and eventually he got injured being so mobile, and became more of a pocket QB, and digressed. Our coaching staff has a weird way of making QB's digress, and its only a matter of time before everyone is calling for Lanning to be benched for the next guy.

Thats an encouraging stat but what if Joel gets hurt. Does our programs success rest on one player?

Iowa state is a coaching graveyard. Letting Rhoads go would only prove that. I just don't see a new coach being the answer right now. Give him another year lol

The naivete that assumes that we can "blink" and fix everything with a new coach is just silly.

The question is "what is the path forward?" I still think our best path to conference championships is with Coach Rhoads . . . not with some coach to be named later.

Well, I'd say that this year's D-line is more solid/consistent than it was with those two (like the sacks record being challenged), and even with the offense being better, the close losses are still very much on par due to things like 3rd and long being converted, and the offense sputtering when it matters, which is leading to another losing record, that possibly being 3-9.

MAYBE ISU gets one more win. So I guess 4-8 or 3-9 would have been really great.
