The discussion on Matt Thomas is so stupid.

There are two sides, and both are equally annoying. You have the "I just love Matt Thomas and have never wanted a Cyclone to succeed as much as I want him to". These people go out of their way to blow him because he's a white kid from the Midwest. It might be subconscious, but that's why you love Matt Thomas so much. Then you have the side that thinks he's worthless. These people got caught up in recruiting hype and are butthurt that he's not the guy we were told he was.

The reality is that Matt Thomas is a solid 6th man type of player that does a lot of things well, but probably nothing great. He's a sound rebounder, good defender, and decent shooter. He has a role on this team, and Prohm is doing a better job of utilizing than it Hoiberg did, IMO. He's not going to be an assassin, or scoring leader, or any of those things. But he's going to give this team valuable minutes and be a guy we can count on not to be a liability coming off the bench.

Exactly. It is idiotic to say he is a bust. It is also dumb to say he has completely lived up to expectations. The biggest problem I think was that he was talked about like he was a sharpshooter. In hindsight he never was.

Yep, Thomas was a terrific mid-range scorer in high school who was slotted as a spot up shooter for a program that did not encourage mid-range shots at all. I've said several times that I think Fred leaving will actually be good for Thomas' production.

By the fans lol. Because he's white and from Wisconsin and Scotty C once played for this program.

And by Fred, Thomas took nearly twice as many 3's as 2's during his first two years here. His shot distribution was much more similar to McGee than Christopherson. I wish Thomas played more like Scotty, Christopherson actually took more 2's than 3's his senior year.

But yeah...just the fans

If he could just eliminate that one handed floater from 15 feet on the baseline from his repertoire he'd be golden

Dont make me go back and pull that quote....I referenced how players often struggle their first 2 years before turning the corner and referenced Frank Kaminsky ( who was awful his first 2 seasons at UW)... You came in and said bigs always take awhile to develop, but guards are who they are after first 2 years....( maybe I should have used Hoiberg as an example for you..)

and so so a guy has only improved if he has dominant games against Kansas and OU, the other 26 games on the regular season schedule are meaningless? Just want to make sure I understand the Rlck J rules on how I can judge Matt's season and development...
Go ahead and try and pull up that quote. You're already acting like a gigantic ***** so go ahead. I hope MT has a good season but trying to say he's a completely different player based off one game against a terrible opponent is pretty silly.

Good point.

How many in betweener shots did the team take in the game? Seemed to be more than usual for hoiball.

Fine, over-exaggeration, but even guys like McIntosh had good games.

I agree with you on McIntosh, but he was a solid contributor throughout his short career. Matt Thomas will (at worst) be known as a solid contributor throughout his 4-year ISU career. I'd like him to shoot 40%+ from behind the arc, as well, but that may not happen. That doesn't mean he doesn't help the team win games.

As president of the Official Matt Thomas Fan Club, it is my duty to note that Matt had another really nice game. 9 points (3-7 shooting, 2-4 from deep), 11 rebounds (holy crap) and 4 assists. 9/11/4 is a great statline for a 6th man, especially a guard. Give Matt minutes and he'll produce.

Whoa whoa whoa. I throw the challenge flag. Is your avatar a photoshopped picture of Matt as Mr Freeze aka Matty Ice? I think not...

Lets pull a couple of your insights...( a lot of these are based on the hours and hours of Oregon State tape you watched....

"No. Hallice Cooke was Pac-12 FOTY and definitely will be starting unless Thomas proves himself. So far Thomas hasn't impressed anyone. Hallice is a better scorer, dribbler, passer, defender, and finisher than Thomas right now. I hope MT proves that he's the better one this year because he certainly isn't right meow."

Oh sorry I didn't know that every three was a "spot up shot". Because you said he was slotted as a spot up shooter (whatever that means anyway). Got any stats on how many shots were directly off a pass vs. shots off the dribble or pull ups in transition?

I will track down the other quote in question when not battling internet wifi As for acting like a giant ****, when you come in the cyclone fan site as a fan and badmouth and tear down 18-20 year olds on our team, I will call you on what you say....I hope Hallice turns out to be a stud ( and he is a nice guy and was great with my son the other night), but his game last night against a terrible opponent was not nearly as good as Matt's, so by your logic he must be in for an awful season against better teams

To me, Hallice Cooke, the backup PG, looked really really good. He has the ability to alter his shots. He plays smart. He is focused.

I have been impressed with Matt's first two games this year......in particular his efforts on rebounding, and his increased hustle on defense in most cases. I think the rebounding from the guards will be critical this year, unless Nader and Niang suddenly become like Hogue and Ejim, or Burton proves to be an outstanding rebounder. I was a little disappointed in the overall rebounding from the ISU guards last night. With the number of 3 point misses by Chicago State, there were a lot of long rebounds to be had by the guards, and as often as not they missed them.

Hopefully, this play by Matt can continue when the competition gets stronger. Time will tell.
