Here is my list of top 5 in no particular order: (I have confined the list to C-USA, MAC and Sun Belt because that is where we are headed)

1. Jeff Brohm--Western Kentucky
2. P.J. Fleck--Western Michigan
3. Todd Monken--Southern Mississippi
4. Skip Holtz--Louisiana Tech
5. Matt Campbell--Toledo

I find these three to be intriguing but more different reasons think they don't fit the bill at Iowa State.

1. Lance Leopold--Buffalo
2. Rock Long--San Diego State
3. Willie Fritz--Georgia Southern

Who are his assistants? Dirk Diggler and Chest Rockwell?

Could Iowa State pursue Jeff Brohm?

Current HC of Western Kentucky (9-2), not making a lot of noise in the HC carousel rumors. Also a former NFL and XFL (yes, that XFL) QB, clearly has a good offensive mind as his Hilltoppers are by far and away the highest scoring team in Conference USA. Personally, I'd love to see a brilliant offensive mind become our next Head Coach, and this is a guy that seems to fly under the radar, ie. unlike Herman and Fuente who will be on everybody's short list this year

They should.

But it only matters if he is interested. Missouri makes more sense for him.

I really like Brohm as a coach! I hope he is on the short list! Also will say ISU will be looking for offensive minded coach over d bc that is what big 12 has come to. I like these 3 names too Kendal Briles, Scott Frost, and Campbell from Toledo.

Is this the Brohm that was QB for Louisville? I swear that guy's name was Brandon, though.

There were 2 Brohm QB's at Louisville. Jeff played in the 90s and his brother Brian played in the mid 00's. Jeff was a QB coach for his younger brother there.

I really think you take a swing at Troy Calhoun and if there is no interest then you go after Monken. He got Southern Miss turned around and was the OC at Oklahoma State under Gundy. He certainly will have ties to Big 12 recruiting areas.

Re: Could Iowa State pursue Jeff Brohm?

I wonder if WKU is a product of a NFL QB in Dougherty more so than a great offense. I think that is the only concern with Brohm and whether he is a good fit for the "run first" offense that has been very solid for us in the last 4 weeks.

Don't know anything about the Navy guy at all. One thing I will say though, is he is used to dealing with self-motivated players. May not work with "talented" guys as well. Could be a replay of the McDermott movie in that aspect.

My first "insight" would be: get a guy who has been successful as a head coach somewhere. They have proved something. Not all the winners at small schools will be winners at big schools, its no sure thing. But to me that is a better chance than someone who was a coordinator and has not been a head coach. Plus after Chizek and Rhoads, I have coordinator fatigue right now.

My other "insight" would be get someone "SMART". I really liked Rhoads & Mac both, and they knew football, but neither struck me as a super genius. Briles, Saban, Meyer - they are not just FB coaches, they strike me as guys who are quite intelligent and would be successful in any profession. JP, follow the old rule for hiring - hire people smarter than you and they will make you look good.

I imagine someone else already got this, but I'm not reading that far to find out. Rhoads was valedictorian at Ankeny High School.

He destroyed himself.
The writing was on the wall with Hoke when he changed the offense and forced Denard Robinson to play qb out of a pro style offense and kept him in the pocket, not utilizing his skill set. Terrible, terrible use of personnel.

Those saying Tressel, Pelini or Leach are the same group that insisted Billy Gillespe should be our bball coach instead of Hoiberg.

Add to that list: Pushing for Larry Brown instead of Prohm or Underwood (and several others) as Hoiberg successor.

I'd put a "wuh?" hire like Rosenfels ahead of Leach. (Neither option would be my preferred path).

ISU needs someone that doesn't run a spread offense. With the lack of recruiting compared to many big 12 teams you're fighting fire with fire. They need someone like the Navy HC or the Georgia Southern HC. An offense the rest of the big 12 doesn't practice against on a daily basis in order to gain an edge.

Thank you I've been saying that for a while now. The Big 12 teams practice to play us every week. We need something that gives them one week to practice for. Be the Stanford of the Midwest. Line up in a pro set and make them stop the run and hit them with play action.
