It was awesome being in Hilton tonight for my first game of the Prohm era. I noticed a few things that I enjoyed and some things that will probably need to be addressed at some point.

The good:
Many set plays where Monte was clearly the go to

When Naz was hot, there were some new wrinkles in our offense to get him the ball quicker than running several ball screens, then the pass to Naz. Gets the defense on their heels

Matt Thomas (although a few missed shots) looked confident and Prohm is using him well

Cooke's defense is very good - will be critical down the stretch

Nader is a completely different player from last year. I feel like he will be key for us when/if McKay gets in foul trouble

Things that need to be addressed (imo):
There is a lot more back and forth between players than in the Hoiberg era. This could be good, or bad. Many times Niang getting on Naz, McKay getting frustrated and whining about little things. I feel like the dynamic among the players might be a little bit different this year.

The inbounds set plays seem to be rough at this point. Maybe its early and its to be expected, but Prohm yelling out where the players need to be, like they dont know where they should be. Hoiberg era seemed a lot smoother on the inbound plays. I think over time, it will get better it just seemed sloppy.

Clearly, more positives than negatives. I loved how we got challenged in the press tonight. We will see the press from Oklahoma for sure, and probably KU..its great to see that we were challenged early.

Love the Prohm era so far, fun to watch these guys doing what they do. Just a few observations from tonight. Go State!!

Press from KU and OU? I don't remember them pressing us much if at all the last several years.

We are a bad matchup for the press.

I'm still not used to hearing a coach yelling out instructions from the bench like Prohm does. Not that it's a bad thing, I love that he's constantly coaching the guys, but just a complete 180 from Hoiberg's calm demeanor.

Thomas has become a glue guy. It's cool to see

I've loved watching him play this year. You can tell he has much more confidence, and knows that he can affect games in other ways even if his 3's aren't falling. His rebounding and passing have been impressive.

11 turnovers. Almost all of those from the middle pass in the press - 3 from McKay, 3 from Niang, 2 from Nader..the press is tough when the big guy is the middle pass. I thought they did a good job of pressing us tonight..and I think we will see it more. And yes, OU presses..at OU last year we had 14 turnovers 8 combined from Mckay, Niang and Hogue. Even at Hilton last year we had 16 turnovers, 10 from Niang, Hogue and Nader. All middle guys in the press.

I don't think they've work the offense or inbounds until last week so it's not surprising Prohm was calling out those inbounds plays. The offense was basically what the guys already knew and called themselves with some emphasis towards attacking the basket. I don't know if there is more dialogue between players as they have been pretty vocal with each other over their career. Somebody always had to calm down Ejim.

Please provide credentials before saying what needs to be addressed. Start with name of college, tenure and record.

Until then I will trust Prohm.

We've actually had quite a few easy lay-ups off of in-bounds plays this year. Not sure that looks like an issue.

Naz's ability (or maybe just willingness) to shot fake and put the ball on the floor is a nice surprise and changes how you have to guard him. Don't remember him taking it to the rim this aggressively since he's been here. Still seems to be TO-prone, in my opinion, but that might work itself out over course of the season (assuming he's a little rusty from all that time off).

Nader did not play well tonight...shot selection remains questionable at times. They didn't need him offensively tonight which is a nice luxury and why I like this team. Wouldn't go as far as to say he is "completely different" until I see more games like the first two. At least he did not step out of bounds tonight :)

Thomas continues to impress with improved overall play and little things that don't get much attention.

McKay, Morris, and Niang are what they are. I think our success rides on consistent play from Nader and solid 3 point shooting from Naz. No one in the country we can't beat if those two are playing well.

As for Prohm, is it just me or was he more animated and involved tonight than the first two games? Seemed that way, but tough to tell on TV.

LOL. Lighten up. It's an opinion. You're on a fan message board.

Did you really come to Cyclone Fanatic message boards expecting to see posts by college coaches?

The big differences I see are better defense and rebounding, and that is strictly an emphasis of Prohm. Just my opinion, but last year I think this would have been a 10-pt game that the starters have to finish. This year it is a comfortable win, because ISU played hard-nose defense. ISU let up a little bit in the second half on the perimeter D, or they probably could have held Chatanooga under 60 points.

ISU is still giving up a few offensive rebounds by a guard leaking out, but it is improved over last year.

I can remember that Fred's teams were choppy this early in the season. They always became a well oiled machine by mid December. If that happens this year, I think our team could become the best ever. They just have more wrinkles to iron out yet.

This is one of the biggest areas fro improvement that I see. When they don't gather it, it usually results in a layup or a foul or both.

Funny. I have been to every game and haven't noticed this. But it may be good. How many times in the past few years did we hear that the team took the opponent lightly, etc. Maybe this means a little more fire out on the court.

The defense was outstanding. I watched that team play Illinois and I was very concerned for our defensive rotations around the three point line. We did a fantastic job of keeping our man in front of us, switching, and generally harassing their distance shooters into passing or well guarded shots.

Not exactly sure.
It was also Fred's fifth year and prohms fifth game. One had a little more time to instill his methods.

I too was at the game last night for the first time in the Prohm area and these were my takaways.....

1. Defense!! I love it when we play good defense. Probably my biggest frustration with Hoiberg ball(and not a big one at that). Our interior defense needs a bit of work yet, but me thinks that had more to do with McKay and Nader getting some fouls that caused us to back off there a bit with our lack of big men to sub. But, loved watching some defense.

2. Count me as one that loved hearing Prohm coaching the players and me being able to hear it up in my section 242 seats. Not sure why that impressed me, but it did....

3. Nader...... Count me in as also being impressed by his play this year so far. I really think he could be the difference maker in our run in the tourney next March. If he can can come in and be the force Niang and McKay are down low, I like our chances.

4. Matt Thomas seems as confident as ever and really played well. I hope he continues to light it up this year.

5. McKay with 17 rebounds was impressive...... he would have had more to if he wasn't cramping up at the end.

This year gonna be fun fellas........

Dude, R-E-L-A-X. This is still a new system & a new offense. Even though it maybe be SIMILAR to Hoiball, it still has different plays. Players are still trying to adjust to ALL of it. It's a 1st year coach with a 1st year system. It takes an adjusting period for EVERYONE including the upper classmen.

The Hogue piece is missing from this team, great rebounder who can consistently get garbage points off boards out to the occasional three pointer. Maybe Burton will fill that role at the end of December. Otherwise this team has everything it needs.
