It's common sense, you don't over pay just for the sake of overpaying. You offer them a fair price that they will accept. A 1-2 million dollar raise a year is pretty fair. Then if/when he starts winning, you renegotiate and he gets more. It's not like we are hiring Nick Saban or another elite coach deserving of a large contract at this point in time.
Why raise your own bid? I don't understand.I'm not suggesting overpay; I'm suggesting don't come with $1.5 mil just because Toledo (likely) won't come with $1 mil. As has been made painfully clear by the naysayers over the last several weeks, there are a lot of job openings this year and he can choose to go to any of those jobs if he feels like he's being lowballed. I'm suggesting that if you think this is your guy, then pay him like he's going to be a Big 12 coach instead of paying him a lowball amount and making him prove he's worth a Big 12 salary. You're hiring him because you think he's a Big 12 coach - you had better pay him like a Big 12 coach. I'm not saying you need to pay him $3 mil to start, but you had better come with more than $1.5. I'm thinking it had better be at least $2 mil.
Agree, and a guy like Campbell is going to need it.Honestly after you go much over $2 million (i.e. enough to not be the worst paying tier of P5 schools) ISU probably gets more value out of increasing the assistant coach budget than reaching for an expensive head coach.

1. We don't even know what the bid is, or even if there is one - this is all speculation.
2. Why rip up a guy's contract to extend and pay him more when there are several years remaining on the original contract?
I'm assuming he's just referring to Rhoads leaving, I hope...

Goodbyes are never easy but they say all good things must come to an end. Forever grateful for my teammates & coaches. #LoyalForeverTrue

Imo unless we have the funds to buy a home-run type hire (elite money), the best thing is to get a seasoned HC from a lower level (ideally one that is a subject matter expert in their offense and that has proven to do more with less) and spend more on assistants. Fritz fills that the best imo.
Of course he is? All the players are tweeting stuff like that... Their coach just coached them for the last time.
If you don't know what the bid is, then shut the **** up and quit ******** just to *****.

FYI I have heard from 2 people that the premature leak isn't sitting well with some parties and this isn't yet a done deal. Campbell is the favorite and numbers have been agreed upon as I previously mentioned, but we were at a very similar stage with a certain candidate about 7 years ago and we walked away at the alter. Just set a cautious reminder.
Thanks for the updates. Hopefully this turns out better than 7 years ago.Bumping this as it continues to be what I hear. Things haven't been, and are not, as close to being done as many have reported. There have been additional interviews today and there are possibly two more in the works.
