Wouldn't it be a good idea to keep at least one D coach on staff?

Not sure. Depends on how they fit in with Matt Campbell's plan. It is pretty obvious that Matt Campbell has an idea of what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. IMO, it is more important that he gets the coaches he wants to implement his plan, rather than requiring that he keeps a present member of our defensive staff. We already have one old member of our staff in place with Lou Ayeni.

I have been impressed with Matt Campbell's moves so far. The aggressiveness and the momentum he is building is impressive. Matt Campbell is definitely a recruiter and it shows already.

And I am not a fan of your ability to reason.
Chizik was bringing his buddies. This is bringing your staff. BIG difference. In Year 1 I would take a staff that has worked together over the learning needed by a group of guys that are new.

Agreed, I would rather coach with a staff that I was comfortable with and knew that they were compatible with my system than taking on a staff of mostly new guys who I knew very little about. Besides as we saw the last 5 years, staff continuity means a lot in this game and can determine if you are successful or not.

Not of this World
This is true now, but Briles had a long successful history at the High School level, and has a great eye for talent and thinking outside the box i.e. Wes Welker. Art just plain understands football and inds players regardless of how they are ranked by anyone else.

It's tough to get kids out of Texas when the Coaching staffs there are filtering them towards in state programs.

Not sure what Wes Welker has to do with anything Art Briles has accomplished.

We need a change here BADLY. We can't compete with our corners 12 yards off the receivers anymore and the Safeties 15 to 20 yards back. Need to play press coverage much, much more....

Are you under the impression that the DB Coach calls the coverage schemes? Because, no.

New coach coming to ISU - LB Coach from Illinois, Mike Ward:

I cannot figure out how to embed tweets, so I apologize

Edit:
Here's an article about Coach Ward, doesn't say he's coming to ISU but Football Scoop indicated he is following Coach Golesh.

http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/football/2015-12-02/ward-leaving-illinois.html

Inside linebackers coach Mike Ward is leaving, a source close to the program told The News-Gazette today.Ward becomes the second coach this week to relocate, following special teams coordinator Alex Golesh, who left for Iowa State.
The 53-year-old Ward spent four years on the Illinois staff. Prior to that, he worked three seasons with Tim Beckman at Toledo.

I want to know so very badly who our DC is going to be. The longer it takes makes me think the guy from Toledo, but that would be too late IMO for recruiting the early period.

Here you go:

Since he was named interim head coach, my guess is that he doesn't join us until after the bowl game. They probably have enough recruiters for the early period here.

Conventional Wisdom = you have to Recruit Texas and Florida
Conventional Wisdom = You cannot win at Iowa State
$%^& conventional wisdom.

CMC obviously has a plan and is going to work hard to get the best football players he can. The idea that only Texas and Florida football players can be successful is just bias. Texas has a great football tradition, but not every great football player comes from Texas. Hey, recruit Florida and Texas for sure, but i like his focus on the midwest.

We are the midwest's Big 12 team, we need to own it and sell it. 9 conference games and testing yourself against the best offenses in the country. Do we really want kids that want easy schedules? It's spin, yes. But you have to spin to sell. Your greatest strength is your greatest weakness, and vice versa, so use it.

Frankly, I did not think I would say this, but the attitude is a breathe of fresh air. CPR, who I was a big supporter of, beat Texas and still said he couldn't recruit against them. Attitude is everything.

I see he was co-Defensive Coordinator at Toledo before moving to Illinois to coach LBs. And before that was DC and Defensive Line coach at Bowling Green. With Veidt (supposedly) taking over as LB coach, will Ward be the D-Line coach, then? Or even DC?

Football Scoop JUST updated their page - not a done deal he's coming here

Illinois: Linebackers coach Mike Ward will not return to Illinois. Sources tell FootballScoop that he is a candidate for a position at Iowa State but this is not a done deal.

I could see this guy being DC easily. The Toledo Mafia would be nearly complete.

Be careful what you wish for....our defenses during the Beckman era, also a DC by background, were absolutely god-awful. I'll leave the stat-checking to all of you, but we were worse than 100th in nearly every major category.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if MC reached outside for a new DC

We ranked dead last in total yards allowed in 2014. Ranked 108th in total defense in 2015. So that would be an improvement.

Outside of a handful of good halves this year, our defense has been laughably bad over the past three seasons. They were improving and had a great game against Texas certainly. I guess the stink from the previous two seasons and the ridiculous second half collapses this year lead to me to give Campbell plenty of leeway in how he builds the defensive staff. We really can't do much worse and in many ways we've been mediocre to poor fundamentally for a long time, and scrambling to find Big12 level talent in the front seven for what seems like forever. Campbell can do what he wants as far as I'm concerned.

The State of Hockey
ill be happy if these coaches can recruit the Midwest really well. Just imagine if its cold in November and a southern school has to come play us at home and most of our players come from the Midwest and are use to the cold. While the Texas players huddle up with coats and hand warmers our players are trotting out there with no sleeves and smiling. We still need to recruit Texas and Florida but how about we go after some recruits around us like Minnesota. I grew up in Minnesota and one thing I know is they play power running football. Which is the kind of recruits we need.

Well now is the State of Texas in the Big XII footprint....Well HELLO Yes recruiting Texas is important but also getting players from the Midwest is also important and easier to recruit to Iowa State....

Here's a question...........Why cant we recruit both the Midwest and Texas......I believe CMC can do both and do it extremely well and oh btw don't judge his recruiting by this 1st class......Then Again be my guest.

I don't think you know how to properly use an elipses.
