It is interesting to me that we weren't using Naz conservatively until he sat out on Sunday. We kept hearing that his hips were still a concern, but it definitely did not affect his playing time. If not finishing the season was this much of a reality, it didn't seem like we had much of a game plan to try to allow him to make it all the way.

I think it was worse for him playing, sitting, trying to stay lose, playing again, etc. He was probably more comfortable playing more and keeping it loose and warmed up.

That is the least of our worries. We still have a ton of spots open and that is assuming Monte will be back---which he won't.
Actually we really dont. Not if Lard is eligable w/Monte we would be at 13 (14 if you count Ashton))

I'm assuming the idea was these first games were a trial and it was either an all or nothing situation. If he came through this okay with hopes for improvement he would continue...if not then he gets shut down. Seems like the latter is how it played out.

This clearly sucks, but I decided to go back and look at some old box scores to see just how badly a 7-man rotation might hurt.

When Iowa State beat North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament in 2014, only 7 players clocked more than 2 minutes.

When Iowa State hung with 2-seed Ohio State for the entire game in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, only 6 players (!) clocked more than 6 minutes.

Thomas will need to play starter-quality minutes, and he has done so in the last two games at least. Cooke will need to seize the role of first guard off the bench. If those guys can step up, the team can keep winning. We will lose some games when we run into foul trouble but that is OK. In that case, maybe Jordan Ashton will have to give us a handful of minutes where he goes out, hustles on defense, and presents a credible three-point threat at the other end so our playmakers can work in space.

Re: Long Out Rest of Season

Look if you want to believe that a) the NCAA will grant the redshirt, b) that Naz will be healthy enough to play, and c) that he will even want to play without pretty much everyone other than Matt Thomas who he has been at Iowa State with, then go right ahead.

He wants to play in the professionally. This gives him the best opportunity.

We don't really foul that much anyway if you are going more than 7 deep effectively you are either a blue blood or a pressing team.

This would be a great problem to have. Morris back, Naz back and having to chose between Lard or Ashton for the last spot

Derpth. So much derpth on that roster.

I don't worry much about a seven man rotation. These are young guys; they can handle big minutes. I do worry about the intangibles Naz brought to the court - the leadership, the fearlessness in big moments, that kind of stuff - but this is still a team with legit Final Four aspirations. Everyone just has to take on a little more to pick up the slack.

Not at all. Does he really want to play here without the people he came in with? Frankly, I think that is as likely as anything. He didn't say that he looked forward to coming back to Iowa State in that statement, did he?

Geez, we get it. How many ******* times are you going to say the same thing? Shut the **** up already.

Re: Long Out Rest of Season

Like I said, I doubt he gets it. Or maybe he'll just be done with basketball. I sort of doubt he'll really want to play on next year's team.

You are the most pessimistic piece of ****. Please stop posting on here. Everyone hates you.

There is literally 1 person on the team he "came in with" that's Georges. I'm sure you know Nader transferred in from NIU and you have to be aware that McKay transferred from Marquette via IHCC. So who else are you talking about Sheron Dorsey Walker? Kerwin Okoro? That's the group he came in with.

By your logic if he were to leave it would be for Rutgers or Oakland U? Right? I mean those are the guys he came in with.

If his goal is to play professionally overseas like nearly every other player that he's played with the last 4 years his best bet is to shut it down and get to 100% for next year. He won't be getting noticed playing injured all year. Smart move on his part.

Will back happy to have Naz back next year. And if we can keep Monte too, will be a pretty good team. Think he is would have been valuable this year, think of next.
