is HCSP, the one who taught Matt d up like that. Shut down Uthoff in the 2nd half did a great job on Hield.
Last year I think many including me thought he was defensive liability. Now our shut down guy. :)

Matt said in some interview that he decided on his own over the summer to improve his defense through work on lateral speed/footwork. Guy works hard.

First question in the interviews was for either Jameel or Matt, and Jameel quickly told Ice to take it

remember how he wasn't a good shooter, and was a liability on defense, according to a lot of posters?

Thomas was most definitely a liability on defense the previous 2 seasons. That's what makes his defense this year so impressive. And he was a 33% from 3 before this year; not terrible but not too good for a SG who doesn't get to the rim, like, ever. I always expected his shooting to come around this year or next, but I also always expected him to be a liability on D.

Another great game for Thomas. Most improved player by far.

His freshman year his D was pretty bad. Last year it was, I'd say, slightly below average generally but he had some holes still and was inconsistent. This year he's a completely new dude on defense.

On offense I think he's always been a good shooter (although never quite this good) but the minutes just weren't there. Now he can turn things around if he starts off slow. Last year if Matt would miss his first two or three shots he'd probably sit most of the game. This season he's getting more consistent minutes and taking advantage of that opportunity.

I thought his defense on Gotcher was big too. That guy is capable of going off when he gets hot, and despite some nice driving layups in the second half, he was never really a factor (I think we decided to extend on him and accept the drive as the better alternative).

Matt's shot was always there, he was just off - once he gets the rhythm going he is going to be tough. The kid has the best looking shot since that guy from the early 90's (think he is in Chicago now).

His defense has been great, he is complete player now.

I think Fred was holding him back, when Matt would get in and miss a shot or two, Fred would sit him down. CSP lets him keep on going and find his shot. It is showing in his confidence.

Matt adds composure the the squad when he is on the floor. It hurts when he sits and you can see it. Loving Matt this year!

Seems like Fred saw Matt as a shooter. It looked to me that Matt's playing time in the past was almost solely based on his three point shooting. As a result, he seemed to really press.

Credit to CSP for seeing that Matt offers more than shooting. As a result, Matt is playing with more confidence and not worrying about coming out of the game.

and credit to Matt for becoming a very good defensive player and better rebounder. He was never a bad rebounder but now he is a good rebounder.
