I'd reserve judgement on the driver here. It's very well possible he didn't know he hit anything or anyone. Sad case all around.

I feel bad for the bus driver also. My daughter said it was raining hard that morning and difficult to see. This whole situation sucks. No winners anywhere in this.

That might apply to it being just an accident that he hit her, but if he knew he hit her and left her to die in the street...

A friend got killed by a CyRide bus in 2005. Either the driver can't see well or students aren't looking. Sad deal all around.
In this case it sounds like he ran a red light, but I'm always amazed at how little respect students give buses while crossing streets on campus.

I would think the bus would have had to be out of service or a passenger would have noticed. Very possible the driver didn't know.

A young 23 old just doing his job in crappy weather. No intent, I assume. Maybe did or not, but scared ******** now. His whole life is changing also.

If he knew and didn't stop, yeah he is in the wrong. Maybe he panicked, I don't know.

Like Boxerdaddy said, I reserved judgement on the driver for now

I think it's at least plausible enough for his lawyers to argue that. Also, depending on the number of people on the bus at that time, you'd think if the impact was noticeable enough for the driver to be aware of it, then some of the passengers might be, too. Those are all things the defense will look into.

Or maybe he is just a cold blooded killer, I don't know. Just speculating, given what we know.

Re: Breaking: CyRide Driver Ran Over Girl

Wonder how many passengers were on the the bus at that time. If they noticed anything...

who was it that speculated it was a delivery truck or something that may have not noticed?

This makes a lot of sense to me. Going to give the driver a lot of the benefit of the doubt and say this looks like a pretty sad tragedy all around.

from what I remember, it wasn't like the ride on those buses was very smooth. I feel like we were always bouncing around in them.

A bus probably weighs 20 tons or so? The girl probably weighed 130 maybe?

How could a driver hit a pedestrian with such force to cause a fatality that he wouldn't hear/feel it? Seems unlikely to me. Of course we are all just speculating here.

I've never driven a bus, so maybe you wouldn't, but I've hit a squirrel with a truck and noticed.

You've run over a squirrel, which is similar to hitting a bump in the road, and noticeable. A large bus hitting a girl (not running her over), is probably not noticeable. Sad situation all around, but I nearly guarantee the bus driver gets out of the felony charge.

Im not a physics expert, but I would think the more force you hit with, the less noticeable it would be.

I hit a deer with our tailgate bus (Which is slightly smaller than a Cy Ride bus) when coming back from a game at night. Barely saw the deer and when I hit it, no one in the bus felt anything. It slightly bent the bumper that is only noticeable if you are looking for it. If I hadn't seen the deer hit the corner, I wouldn't have known anything happened.

I could see how this could go unnoticed by the driver. Really sad situation.

So I assume this was a gold #22 bus that was turning left onto Ash. If the girl was coming from Buchanan and it was raining hard it is very understandable that she didn't see the bus coming. However, it would be hard to believe the driver didn't see her if she was hit by the front of the bus, possibly if she got clipped by the side.

We're talking 20 tons vs a fairly small girl, the bus could just clip her and the injuries could be life threatening. I don't have any first hand knowledge or anything but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that the impact as felt from inside the bus wouldn't necessarily be huge.

I'm thinking she got clipped by the bus. Just speculation though. If that's the case, he likely didn't notice it and any passengers might not have either.

The other factor here is: this was highly publicized- wouldn't you at least wonder if you knew where it happened, and that you were in that exact area at that approximate time?

I'm not condemning the driver as I will allow the possibility that he may not have known or felt the impact, but even in that scenario, I think I would check my vehicle for damage at the very least, and talk to someone about the possibility.
