Jsb is right with this. McKay doesn't owe the fans anything.

I agree he doesn't owe the fans anything, but his tweets are indicative of his attitude. He showed up the coaching staff by the "1 game" tweet, and talking to the media about it.

What are you talking about? It's the standard athlete/public figure approach, darn near word for word.
Midwesterners tend to be some bitter people with long memories. I've already run into a handful of people in the *** him group today, and my folks are a happier sort.

It's simply what you do.

I think that may have gone over your head...

All that McKay needs to do is make things right with his coaches and teammates and play his *ss off going forward. We'll love him like he's family if he can put this back together and help this team make a run in the NCAA tournament.

McKay is gone in 2 months....forever. I think he can live without Twitter for that period of time. And no, he should not apologize the fans, that would be ridiculous. I don't want to hear anything from him. Just get your head right or leave.

Frankly, I'm hoping for the OLD McKAY - you know, the one with the tireless hustle, unflappable attitude...the MAN exceeding expectations, tough, durable, AND earning notice and consideration from the
NBA?
THIS version isn't earning much respect from anyone.

"I regret my actions and the difficult situation that I created for my teammates and coaches. I am going to work hard to set things right and put us in a situation to live up to our full potential as a team. I apologize for my actions, because I know that they disappointed my teammates, coaches and fans. As a first step, I will sign off from Twitter and other social media until the end of the season in order to focus on my coursework and the rest of this season.

Go Cyclones!"

Something like that would work.

It's about time you apologized.

Last year, I talked to a member of the Hoiberg staff about McKay. This was before he became eligible to play. I asked how tough he was. He seemed very talented, but in the Cap City League, he never seemed to play hard (who does) and always seemed to be fooling around. I told the staff member that I was hoping our "rim-protector" would be more mean. Well, the staff member texted McKay right then and there to say that a fan was wondering if he was tough enough.

For me, the question was answered last year. McKay played such an important role on the team. Rebounds, blocked shots, altered shots, running the court, and mostly giving his all. He must have ended up on the ground 30 times last year because he was going all out (perhaps also a bit out of control at times). I don't remember anyone even suggesting that he was soft last season (perhaps because we were focused on BDJ). And then he wins Big 12 defensive player of the year.

Let's remember that McKay is that same guy. Things have changed some with Prohm, without Naz, and even with McKay trying to enhance his game during the off-season. There probably are factors that we don't know. So, I'm still going to be optimistic that the player who won me over last year is still the player on our team. Yes, he may tweet more than some like and he has emoted on the sideline, but he has also played through pain.

I'm still glad that we have last year's Big 12 defensive player of the game . . . the guy who beat everyone down court last year . . . on our team. Hoping for the best for him.

P.S. The fact that we have more posts in the McKay thread than the game thread today mostly shows how many drama queens we have on this site!

If true, then that's just weird. The staff member feels he needs to let McKay know what a fan thinks in order to motivate him? Sounds like he's the real "drama queen"...

I know his attitude. When I was a junior in high school, I took drivers ed on simulators. I was in the back revving the driver simulator top a hundred going around corners. It was noisy and people kept looking to the back of the room. Good times. CAP League type stuff. Real Good times. Yet now he needs to suck it up and play for his future.

I can tell you that i have heard rumblings from within the program that there's some barriers that could be creating these issues. I believe that McKay may be getting the brunt of his attitude issue based on factors within the team. Such as a certain couple players not playing within the team concept and more importantly playing for themselves and the accolades that come with success.

If i had to guess McKay is dissatisfied with our offense and the only time McKay ever gets the ball fed to him is on lobs. Today we saw Niang consistanly posting up and getting excellent entry passes from Monte. So, whens the last time you saw a post up and entry pass to McKay. Instead its his job to go out and set picks for everyone else. Part of the team concept is keeping everyone happy.

I agree with Cycsk - if anyone thinks this team will succeed long term without McKay your greatly under estimating his impact and how his absence will impact this team long term. With that said, i think he needs to get some bench during the game as he's banging with these guys for 40 mins a game and has to work his rear off to get a rebound to have any chances at scoring. IMO - this is an ego thing. He's not getting the opportunity to shine with Monte and George.

I'm a McKay fan and an ISU fan. I hope he gets his head on straight and settle whatever issue is ailing him because we need him for a run in the Big 12 and NCAA.

1. Monte and McKay are friends and the idea that Monte would be avoiding getting the ball to McKay seems kind of stupid.

2. Monte has gotten plenty of post feeds, but he fumbles the ball and misses the shot.

There is a huge difference between McKay and Niang catching a bounce pass, or dribbling, or passing, or making a layup. To say that McKay is not given the same offensive opportunity is dumb - the team and coaches know what he is capable of doing - they've seen the results.

For the record, the staff member just laughed about it as he texted McKay. The assumption was that McKay was plenty tough enough . . . and that I was a fool to think that he might not be. Once McKay started playing last year, there was no doubt that he was tough enough.

McKay cannot try to be Niang. He needs to accept his role. He needs to contest shots, rebound, run the court, lobs and put backs. He is not a low post scorer or facilitator on offense. All he needs to do is the things he can do.

Not to defend McKay but maybe what he was trying to say is they took him aside and told him to get straightened up and be a team member. In his mind he thinks he can do that over the next couple of days and prove to the team he is ready to be a team member and follow the team's needs.

Personally, I would have responded to her with, "you know honey, how about getting daddy another beer".
But your answer is OK too,
It was via text. She's at ISU and I'm in Eastern Iowa and I didn't want to wait 2 hours for that beer. :)
