Hoiberg turned this program from a doormat to a consistent winner. That's something we should all be grateful for.

But Fred's success the last couple of years was hinged upon some buzzer beaters and very close key wins. Those even out eventually. It's no coincidence that this year's team and last year's team have basically the same stats. We are just losing more close games which is bound to happen. Plus we play more good teams this year that we have in the past.

Fred did a great job, no one can deny it. But some people talk about this program as if it was the football program. McDermott was the outlier. Morgan was never a real long term option, and he still won an NCAA tourney game. Orr had ISU a solid program. Floyd and Eustachy did great things here. Fred had the benefit of following McDoormats complete gutting of expectations of this program.

I would've loved if Fred had stayed forever and I think he would've done amazing things, but as it stands, I think he has to be assessed as a coach that did some great things in terms of winning consistently. Mostly his tenure will be classified as "what might have been".

I'm always amazed at the hate towards Fred. His jersey is in the rafters, he brought back Hilton Magic along with many fans. He gave us national exposure which continues this year. He's never said anything negative about Iowa State that I can recall.

As far as him leaving, he left for a dream job with a bigger salary. The nerve.

He left Prohm with a solid roster full of veteran players. That's a helluva transition year for a new coach to build off of. Prohm has the luxury to get settled in, learn all about ISU and what it takes to recruit here while having one of the best ambassadors ISU has ever had in Georges. If Fred would have waited and left after this season and left the cupboard "bare" Prohm (or whoever the new coach would be) would be in far worse shape.

The timing of the transition last year was sudden, but it realistically only cost us a shot at a player or two. It's not like we were going to be landing a bunch of 5 star guys had Fred stayed.

For a fan base to throw "**** Fred" around after what he's done is just dumb.

there is no doubt that Fred left a ton of positive things.

He also left a lot of negative things.

I don't hate Fred but if there were no coaching changes last year ISU is very likely top 5 and the Bulls are very likely not a half game out of missing the playoffs. To me it's more a sigh of frustration about what could have been for my two favorite teams. I really don't even have an NFL, NHL or MLB team. I'm pretty much exclusively ISU/Bulls fan and sometimes I follow international/european soccer. Bulls my whole life, Cyclones since I stepped on campus at 18. One coaching change seems to have been pretty damaging to my entire sports world at least for this one year. I hadn't even thought that McKay would be a "Fred Whisperer" player like Royce, didn't even occur to me, that's been as big a loss as Naz or any of the recruits we lost.

My frustrations are purely selfish wanting my teams to win, I have no ill will at all towards Fred as a person.

Great post.

4 of ISU's last 6 coaches (not counting Prohm either way) have been runaway success stories. ISU is set up to win and compete in basketball as a program.

i don't know about runaway success. Larry ****ed up recruiting. Tim sort of did too.

I think the bottom line is a non blueblood program like Iowa state is never going to have long term sustained success changing coaches every 5 years. I don't care if they were fired, left before they were fired, had a drinking problem, or left to follow their only true dream in life. It just doesn't breed success. I thought maybe s home town guy that begged for the job might want to stay. Now, I've got to hope prohm does.

Exactly. And it shows. We've never made the NCAA tournament 5 years in a row. But outside of McDermott, everyone has had some kind of success.

I do think Hoiberg could have built it into a powerhouse (maybe that's too strong...sustained success at worst).

That said, I think Prohm is a better actual coach than Fred. And I think that will show as the years go by. But as we know, its all about recruiting.

Fred brought expectations which this fanbase has proven incapable of handling with any kind of dignity or class.

Fred = Cael

I think Cael had a good reason to leave. He had no support from our AD and goes were he is payed well and his program is supported.

I think Fred just wanted out and screwed ISU on recruiting his last year.

List them.

1. No emphasis on building the program based on recruiting.

2. A team culture that he could manage but wasn't one that could be sustained when another coach took over. I'm talking about things like letting players show up late to practice.

Those are the two main things. Each have lots of negative implications.
