I was looking at Solomon's freshman year comparables on Kenpom this morning. There are 2 notables.

-Montrezl Harrell
-Percy Gibson

Solomon got his first college assist last night, btw. That helps explain the Percy comparison.

I think Harrell is a really good comparison. Both good athletes, not great ones. Both big, but not massive. Both can run and both can shoot.

Here nor there
When you are fighting just to get in the NCAA tournament you can't throw away minutes hoping someone can figure out how to defend screen roll when bullets are flying for real.
You can if the other option is still losing those games. There was no opportunity cost when the other option was Holden or Bowie or TCU's post looking like an AA. And it's a myth to think he played every inconsequential minute available, of which there are a significant amount. Yes, the injury was very timing.

I appreciate the protecting the shield mindset. No coach is perfect, and there have several missteps in our post situation. I'm a big enough believer in Prohm to ignore that.

I like the Harrell comparison as well, although If my memory serves I feel like Solomon can easily be a bigger threat from the mid-range and out than Harrell was. But either way would love to see that type of player on our team.

I said it earlier in a different thread. Solomon's game kinda reminds me of Larry Johnson's a bit. Both know they are undersized but don't play like it or let that scare them. Both work effortlessly on boards even if they aren't the greatest natural rebounder, and Solomon has a grown mans body who likes to bang it down low, no matter the size of the man he is going up against.

Now, I know LJ is a looong shot, but little things about Solomons game really remind me of the way he played.

Protecting the shield? **** outta here with that nonsense. It doesn't take a basketball genius to see why Solomon wasn't getting minutes... he was completely lost on defense. He looked like a lost puppy wandering around out there.

Its one thing to be bad on defense... its another to be bad and completely out of position. Did Steve ride with Holden and Bowie too long? I think he did but it wasn't like Solomon was really showing much... hell he just got worked over 8 days ago in Austin.

It takes time for a young big to learn how to defend screen roll and maybe Solomon has figured that out. We get our chance to find out when a 14-6 big man comes to town Saturday.

Investment minutes with very little cost, yet 3 minutes at Baylor for ***** sake. It's water under the bridge but Prohm made several missteps in regards to the post situation this year.

Remember when we all thought Percy was really good because Royce was throwing him the ball for easy dunks/layups from all sorts of ridiculous angles?

Remember what happened to his production once Royce left?

I remember those days. Good days.

I didn't get to watch the game, but I was wondering what Kansas State had for size since Johnson was out. I was just curious if many of Young's rebounds were because going against much smaller players.

Terrible positioning and awareness by KSU led to a lot of Young's offensive put backs. Wasn't really a matter of big or small.

This is true, but that doesn't mean it should take away from Solomon's production. He had to be in the right spots to get those putbacks. But they were easier than most offensive boards will be, for sure

Oh definitely taking nothing away from SY, his finishing was amazing last night. I just didn't want someone to think he was like Bayloring KSU guards or something to get his boards.

So what happened to that "Solomon is unhappy with his role on the team and looking at his options after this season" troll that rolled in here last month? :p

The kid looks happy as a clam and is going to be a returning starter.

A big, huge, hulking, mean clam that loves crushing fools on the offensive glass, that is.

How can you tell, I don't know if he has ever made another facial expression than the one that is constantly on his face hahaha

Did I miss something on Bowie or has he just been relegated to spot minutes only when necessary?
He got the same minutes as David Bowie in that game. I don't think he'll be in the regular rotation -might just see spot minutes in case of foul trouble (Deonte, maybe). Or when we need to ice the game at the FT line :)

Playing as our only "big" covers up the fact this kid can shoot the ball.

Very interested to see after another six months of weight work and hopefully good nutrition.

Could be the textbook "4".
Yeah, I posted after the Orlando tourney, when he was held out with the broken bone, that I watched him shoot the ball from 15 to past the 3-pt arc. He had very good technique and a tight backspin. Even with the bad hand, he was draining mid-to-long jumpers at a very solid rate. Good shooter.

I haven't seen much to show that he can put the ball on the floor very effectively at this stage. Hopefully, that can be an area of improvement.
