I went to HS with him. I won't claim to have been close friends with him, but this is definitely out of character for him; he always had a good reputation. I hate to speculate, but CTE/addiction would explain things.
Which just makes it a sad deal all around. Really hope he gets the help he needs.

This. Not excusing his behavior but he has had a lot of life shortfalls in such a short time.
-College career ending injury at ISU (didn't end his playing career but watch his presser after the Baylor game his senior year and see how much it meant to him to be a Cyclone)
-He gets busted for PED's. It was a mistake on him but you hear all the time about how pros use PEDs and eventually come back but when you are a rookie like him, it is essentially career ending which ended up proving true.
-As I wondered but another poster confirmed, he got divorced from his college sweetheart.
That's all we really know he is going through but there very well could be more. I'm no psychologist but I cannot imagine how much that does to a mind. It doesn't matter what kind of life high points you are riding but he may have felt he lost everything. I hope he can get his life together and start over. He is a great Cyclone and is still one of my favorites.

Yeah, and like Tyler, Jake probably needs help, not judgement.
I hope he gets help, and has loved ones to get him the help he needs. Asking for help is never easy and doesn't make you less of a human sometimes you need others to have your back. Cyclone nation is thinking of you.

I have no idea what is going on with Jake but I do know this is extremely out of character for the man who used to wear the Cardinal and Gold. To this day, Jake is one of the most standup young men I have ever been around at Iowa State.
For one reason or another, he is making bad decisions and going through a rough time. I just hope and pray that he gets help he needs and can recover from all of this. I too worry about those three letters and pray this is not the case.
Instead of judging him, my hope is that some influential members of the Cyclone Nation reach out to show Jake we are still very much rooting for him in life after football.

#20 was all-in for Iowa State. He should always be remembered for how much he gave for our team.

Just about single-handedly beating Baylor with one arm for his last game was a pretty good performance. That dude was Cyclone football.

True or not, I had heard his PED offense was kind of bogus. He was injured and taking suggested supplements to help rehab quicker/stronger. Not sure if that is what got him or if he enhanced the supplements further than recommended.
