Every time a Hawk fan friend spouts off the Super Bowl comment, I say the same thing: I'll concede the late 90s/early 00s for it. Back then it was a more important game because making the Iowa series competitive again was a necessary step to rebuild our program. Nowadays it has been replaced by the need to do better in conference play. But they still won't let it go because it makes them feel better about themselves.
Fun fact: I watched the 2013 CyHawk basketball game with one of said friends, and he tried to pull the "most important game" card. For the basketball game. And still stuck to his guns even after I spent a good 10 minutes explaining the nuances of Kansas and Big 12 basketball to him.
ISU played their best game vs. KSU in '99. They blew it, but still...In 2000 ISU went on to have their only winning conference season. THAT's what was keeping the momentum going.
Also the '02 game, Iowa was the team that came out on fire to start and then some turnovers and ISU gets settled in and it's a victory. Funny thing about that--in 2001, ISU was up 14-0, but let Iowa back in before closing it out. That's 14 points. In 2002, it's 24-7, which is only 17 points, but Iowa fans still act like it was mathematically impossible for ISU to come back. One number they forget is the 350+ that Seneca without blinking.
Such a weird mindset and it's what makes it impossible to even attempt to discuss the series with them. They say the same crap about basketball when ISU goes on to make the NCAA tourney every year and achieve far greater things than some December non conference game.
