Every time a Hawk fan friend spouts off the Super Bowl comment, I say the same thing: I'll concede the late 90s/early 00s for it. Back then it was a more important game because making the Iowa series competitive again was a necessary step to rebuild our program. Nowadays it has been replaced by the need to do better in conference play. But they still won't let it go because it makes them feel better about themselves.

Fun fact: I watched the 2013 CyHawk basketball game with one of said friends, and he tried to pull the "most important game" card. For the basketball game. And still stuck to his guns even after I spent a good 10 minutes explaining the nuances of Kansas and Big 12 basketball to him.

ISU played their best game vs. KSU in '99. They blew it, but still...In 2000 ISU went on to have their only winning conference season. THAT's what was keeping the momentum going.

Also the '02 game, Iowa was the team that came out on fire to start and then some turnovers and ISU gets settled in and it's a victory. Funny thing about that--in 2001, ISU was up 14-0, but let Iowa back in before closing it out. That's 14 points. In 2002, it's 24-7, which is only 17 points, but Iowa fans still act like it was mathematically impossible for ISU to come back. One number they forget is the 350+ that Seneca without blinking.

Such a weird mindset and it's what makes it impossible to even attempt to discuss the series with them. They say the same crap about basketball when ISU goes on to make the NCAA tourney every year and achieve far greater things than some December non conference game.

Brent Blum @brentblum

Two of last 5 sell outs in Kinnick have been against Iowa State. But I guess it's just another week in eastern Iowa.

9:11 PM - Sep 4, 2017

Blum with the closer.

May I add, when the game is in Ames they flock to town in high numbers.

The stuff written by Dochterman and others about how Iowa State is just another game is just not reflected in the attendance numbers and attention of fans, etc. If Nebraska is more important as a conference "rival" then why hasn't that game sold out in Kinnick in 3 times they've played since joining B1G? I'm sure Nebraska fans travel well too. Just accept the Iowa State game matters and have fun with it. That's what bothers me.

Agreed Blum. I have been throwing attendance FACTS, not some opinion articles from Hawk homers but our resident hawk trolls are either oblivious or just flat out can't accept the fact that this is a big game for BOTH schools.

The thing that is weird this year I am seeing a lot of media in the state saying this game doesn't matter as much to Iowa or it fans, as it does to ISU. Looking at comments out of the football offices in Iowa City say different.

This, as well as the "Super Bowl" comment, are what's called self-coping mechanisms, and Hok fan is never going to give them up.

I can assure you that most Iowa fans don't think Iowa is "light years" ahead of ISU. Thinking that is just plain ludicrous.

Bottom line- this 40-year series has long since run its course. It is now just a focal point for angry feelings and mud-slinging.
It needs to end..

This game is our State's biggest football game since we have no professional team and never will. It's gonna be a super Bowl no matter what school blames the other for coining the term. No sporting event brings more Iowa citizenry together than this one.

If ISU had only won 5 games the last 20 years, Iowa fans wouldn't be saying this.

The only times Iowa fans could make a surface-claim that it’s Iowa State’s Super Bowl are seasons when ISU won the game, but Iowa had a far better season. (Which doesn’t prove anything anyway, but let’s pretend benefit-of-doubt)

2014: ISU 2-10, Iowa 7-6
2007: ISU 3-9, Iowa 6-6 (actually not a monumental difference)
2002: ISU 7-7, Iowa 11-2*
1982: ISU 4-6-1, Iowa 8-4
1981: ISU 5-5-1, Iowa 8-4 (w/ Rose Bowl appearance)
---> So, 5 occurrences out of 40 seasons.

* At the time the game was played, nobody could predict that W/L chasm.

There are too many Iowa fanboy beat reporters like Dochterman in this state that grew up hawk fans and now perpetuate elitist fan rhetoric like this whenever ISU is discussed. They dont have the perspective to write a piece like this because theyve lived and breathed Hawkeye sports their entire lives, and I'm guessing a few of them have never lived outside the Eastern Iowa bubble.

So what you are saying is Campbell can't get his boys up for a big game and Coach Kilmer (CYTwins reference there) can? So do we have a coaching problem here?

I think what he is saying is Campbell treats this as just another game and focuses on getting his team better while Kilmer treats it like it's the only game that matters on the schedule.
