Eyes turn to Allen Field House today.

@PeteBrush U of Kansas compliance officer Jeff Smith takes the stand at #HoopsTrial. Ex-Adidas marketing boss Jim Gatto is accused of defrauding the school by paying off a former Kansas recruit reported to be Silvio De Sousa

and now Billy Preston...

@AdamZagoria Kansas Compliance Director Jeff Smith began his testimony today as Billy Preston’s name was mentioned for the first time

TJ Gassnola is expected up next and there should be some more fireworks then.

hard to believe so many people would try to tarnish the reputation of the greatest program in history. the NCAA will sure show those individuals you don't mess with KU basketball!

Knowing the NCAA, KU will receive an extra scholarship for being the victim of such illicit deals. Poor KU, how could they have known multiple of their players were getting paid to go to there?

I'll have to listen to sports radio after work and see how many times KU apologists refer to themselves as victims.

How do you "defraud" a school by handing them elite recruits?

It goes something like this: the athlete signs a school letter saying he is eligible but he isn't because of illicit payments, thus defrauding that school.

The fix seems to be to let these youngsters be paid by third parties and remain eligible to play college ball. The NCAA can't police this under the table stuff, so the only rational approach is to allow it. They're paid anyway both by the school with scholarship and stipend (all of them), and a few by third parties like Adidas.

Interesting, KU fans had been adamant that De Sousa would be eligible this year... Now? Also will they take down last years banner?

Also Wednesday, while a KU compliance director took the witness stand, it was revealed that De Sousa at one point had signed a contract with a pro team in Spain.

Also on Wednesday, Jeff Smith, senior director of compliance for the KU athletic department, testified that he was made aware at some point that De Sousa signed a contract with a pro team in Spain.
“Yes,” Smith said.
Asked if he was aware of an agreement between De Sousa and a sports agent, Smith said, “I don’t recall which documents I was given.”
He added that Kansas had taken steps to look into the matter and confirmed that De Sousa was on the current Kansas team.
Smith was asked if he was aware of a $90,000 payment to the family of Preston, and a $20,000 payment to De Sousa’s guardian, Fenny Falmagne.
“I don’t know anything about that,” Smith said in both cases.

Coach Self quoted in ESPN article today:

"I obviously can't really comment on what's ongoing," Kansas coach Bill Self said Wednesday. "But I can say this, in the past I've made a statement that we certainly believe, based on the information we have, that this thing would have a positive resolution. But that was also based on the information that we had. So, you know, who knows what could potentially happen in the next, you know, whatever period of time? But I'm taking the approach, as everybody is on our team, that we're going to have Silvio De Sousa playing for us this year."

Nice. Surely, there's no expectation that you would go look at your records to prepare for trial. Very solid answer.
