I would like to see more creativity on first down. Seems like we've put Brock into alot of 3 and 6+, and luckily he has done a very nice job converting them. I'd like to seem more quick screens or short passes on 1st down.
I don't think some of them are that talented if I am being honest. They play hard but they seem to lack talent. Hopefully that changes or some new guys come in and can run block better
I’m excited for the suffocating ball-control offense CMC’s teams will have once the OL is dominant. What we’re trying to do necessitates having nearly that level of OL. I just hope the defense and skill positions are as good as they are now when that happens.
As good as DM is, and now Purdy, some type of play action or other deception would keep most defenses honest.
Right, but the play action doesn't work if you don't have a base set of plays to then do variations from.
After a quick review of the play by play, Iowa State ran 35 first down plays and 24 of those plays were runs.
Are you suggesting are offense is fundamentally flawed? I don’t completely disagree, but we do have the ability to show run and then pass. We’ve used it successfully at times.
I'm sorry, you'd think we lost by reading this thread. It's easy to sit in the stands and watch on TV and be a critic. All I'm saying is Campbell and staff know a little bit more about football than any of us. You have to keep the defense honest. Not saying that nobody is allowed to have an opinion, but let's pick our battles. We won for pete's sake.

I think the "strike after a turnover" stuff is overplayed. More of a fun armchair QB strategy than anything. Stick to the gameplan.
That being said I thought the play calling really put our true freshman QB in a lot of bad situations where he's trying to make a 7-10 yard play behind a leaky O Line. TT was really going off on the run on first down, thought there were a lot of missed opportunities to keep them honest and expose that aggression.

I agree with your second paragraph. The coaches get paid a lot of money to do this, so if they thought they saw something, I’ll believe them. My worry was, whatever they saw, wasn’t working, and constantly getting stuffed after a yard run on first down was putting Purdy behind the chains throughout most of the game.
Being critical at the micro level is reflective of the optimism at the macro level. 3 years ago we’d be ecstatic over any win, let alone over a team that should have been in the top-25. Due to the phenomenal job by this staff in less than 3 years, that win now is viewed in the context of pursuing a Big 12 title.
Don’t confuse analyzing aspects of the game with dissatisfaction or disappointment
What was the success rate of one vs. the other?
Personally a think a roll out with Purdy to have 3 levels to choose from would be something that at least can get a defense flowing. Still may need better Oline play to get someone out on the edge though.
1) David Montgomery is pretty good and needs the ball

Not something that should be a go-to or automatic, but in a game where momentum is shifting, and that kind of play is there, why not?
Otherwise at least a high success play to keep things moving. Dive up the middle is a good way to lose the flow.
