He got a great contract with a huge NBA team and everyone gripes about it. He didn't leave us for KU or another college job. He went for money and a shot at the highest level. Any competitive person who has aspirations would. I hope he hangs on and sees some success. Why do fans get more joy out of this "I told you so" mentality?

That Bulls team right now is atrocious. The fact they almost beat the Nuggets last night, though, is encouraging. If they were healthy and could stay healthy, the team isn't great but its a lot better than it is now. I can't remember when Dunn, Portis and Markannen are supposed to be back but I know it is going to be a while for Markannen. Good news is they should get another lottery pick. They have a ton of cap space after this year I believe, but the front office and ownership have been horrible in getting top flight free agents.

He's coaching in the NBA because he got tired of the dirty recruiting game.

(Rashad Vaughn, Abdul Malik Abu, Jaylen Johnson, Kyle Kuzma, etc.
Vaughn- paid by UNLV for sure
Malik Abu- NC State named as cheaters
Johnson- Louisville named as cheaters
Kuzma-named in Adidas trial
Yeah, he prefers the NBA.

Don’t break it to CyTwins, he thinks it’s about the money.

Lol I kind of know a little bit about the situation but yes he prefers the NBA because of no recruiting. He doesn't like coaching though

He really kind of is which is why you'll see he won't be a HC anywhere again after he gets fired. He would have been paid WAY less for a less involved job
He wanted to give being an NBA coach a try. No recruiting, more scheming at the highest level.

I don’t think making 5 million for 5 as opposed to making what he could have made in college has any influence as to whether this is his last coaching job or not. Hence, he’s not coaching the Bulls because of the money.

If he could have gotten 5 mill a year to be a GM he would have done that over coaching is what I'm saying. He had/has zero intentions of coaching past his 5 year contract no matter what happened

It may not be the major factor, but getting a nice raise and a chance at more is part of what driven people want typically. I don't think that's a negative at all. People talk about others "leaving for the money" as some great evil when it's what most people in most jobs do.

Ultimately for top talent I think it is about reaching the highest level more than the money, but money is often representative of the respect of that level.

Plus when you balls it up as GM you can always fire the coach and get another three years for yourself.

Consensus around here from people with half a brain (lots of message board bulls fans are quite irrational) is Fred is a good offense coach, all around good guy, who was not given a chance to compete given the talent he has been provided from the front office.

Due to this he will likely be gone soon but for now he's the captain of the tank effort.

In hindsight, Fred would of probably been better off waiting one more year then taking the Timberwolves Job, but no one could of known Flip was going to pass away at that time.

Fun?

Two teams have a legit chance to win the championship. The rest are just games.

The playoffs tend to get more intense as series get evened up and all but I'm not sure if 'fun' is how I'd describe it. Typically the better team simply wins out after they've spent a week talking **** in pressers, shoving opponents using their coaches for soundboards more than guidance.

The NCAA tourney although lower quality of play is way more fun due to the crapshoot of a one game situation. Not sure if there's a more exciting 4 days in sports than the first weekend of the tournament.

Yeah the best outcome for the Bulls is to end up with a Top 10 pick next year and get a high level guard (Langford, Grimes, etc.). Lavine (23) is showing All-Star potential, Lauri (21) is one of the best players in his draft class and really fits today's NBA game, and while it's way too early to evaluate the Carter (19) pick, he's shown some good early promise as a high motor big who can stretch the floor a little and also defend. They also have nice supplemental pieces in Dunn (needs to keep improving as a shooter) and Portis. The ideal situation is one more year with a high lottery pick and then fill in the gaps with free agency where you may need to make at least one big splash. Like you said though, the FO has struggled courting big name free agents in the past.

P.S. Send Jabari Parker to Mars after this season, woof

I can see Fred in a NBA GM role some day but I would love for him to be the next Athletic Director at Iowa State when Pollard is done. I hope that is not anytime soon but I think Fred would be a perfect fit in that job. I agree with you, I don't know if this coaching thing is his long term goal or not.

Because if it's something Fred loves to do, it's work all kinds of crazy hours entertaining and begging and schmoozing donors, getting late night calls from ALL the coaches when athletes get out of tolerance, etc...

Yep - he's a "natural"... o_O

I don’t know if I see him as an AD. He doesn’t like to suck up to people and that’s an AD job. Raising money is like recruiting. If you believe the spin, Fred hates recruiting so why bother.

I think his talent is in college coaching. I think he’ll decide it’s worth the recruiting headache and he’ll go back to it.

If you want an inexperienced, poorly suited ISU retread at AD at least hire DMac since he can actually get people excited based solely on his personality.

Fred just isn’t a nba caliber coach. I think he knows talent which is why he could recruit really well. He needs to be in the front office of an nba team scouting talent.

I'm nowhere near being a Fred fan, but your post is ill-informed or maybe just flat out ignorant.

And to prove I'm not a Fred fan, I don't think anyone can point to the timberwolves and think Fred did a good job in the 2nd office during his tenure.

Fred had an opportunity for the Wolves job. The Wolves wanted Fred badly but he chose to stay at ISU instead. People see what a mess the Bulls organization is. The Wolves front office is no rose garden either.
