Advanced statistics in terms of offensive and defensive performance relate to how the team performs as a whole when a specific player is on the floor. So if a player makes a mistake that causes another player's man to score, everyone on the floor takes a hit.
Another fact that favors Jacobson. No wonder he’s statistically a better defender than Lard and why our team defense is significantly better.

Thanks, I knew that was how some of them worked but the one linked confused me. Also, it said it was the expected points scored on 100 possessions so wouldn't a lower number be better? Jacobson's number was lower than Lards.

It doesn't really matter. I don't have a dog in this fight. I just thought it was silly that a guy got attacked for saying that it wasn't necessarily a no brainer that Lard would be a far better player all around than Jacobson. He could be, but he could have even regressed with everything that happened since last year. Heck, despite going to treatment it sounds like he did something that got him suspended for a month. I don't think that it has ever been clear if that was before or after treatment.

I'm just glad that there are options at a historically thin position for ISU.

Ah, I see now. You're trolling me. Well played. At least we can agree that Lard is a better defender than Jacobson. I thought for a minute you were serious.

Where are the advanced def stats you’re using? These are kind of hard to find.

You can't really compare those numbers across seasons since teams change so much which is why I was using the rank within the team. This is a much better discussion to have than some of the discussions had last year.

Nate, don’t you have practice? I know you’re the team leader in defense this year, but no, you’re not a better defender than all but Lard last year.

I’m not trolling you, although your complete disregard for logic and reason probably deserves to be. I get it, you’re emotionally attached to your opinion about Lard, facts and stats be damned.

But that is flawed as well since coaches will often do things like subbing out their best defender(s) for a blow when the opposition's best offensive threat takes a seat. Chris Babb was never Big 12 all conference defender because he always defended the other team's biggest threat, didn't try to block shots and denied him the ball rather than getting a bunch of steals. He also subbed out when that offensive star subbed out.

But defenesive rating isn't about steals or blocked shots or any individual statistic, it's just how well your team plays defensively when you're on the floor. Babb had a pretty good rating his senior year.

Last thing I will say. When you leave the floor whenever the other team's biggest offensive threat does your +/- will suffer. I'm not saying that is the case for anyone in this situation, but who leaves the floor with you can have as much to do with your +/- as you do.

I'm not giving an opinion on anything. I'm just relaying facts. We're better defensively this year than last year. Lard was our best defensive player last year. Jacobson is one of our worst defensive players this year.
I don't know if that's true but if it is then we are in a good spot because I see a solid player that is fundamentally sound and rarely in the wrong spot. To say he is the worse defensive player is like saying Durant is the worse 3 point shooter of the big 3 on the warriors.

Any defensive lapses might be due to him defending the opposing team's 5. Mj is more of a 4 so he's guarding out of his position due to suspensions.

Going on +/- rankings is bad in general when including garbage minutes like a poster has with Conditt, unless you feel good about thinking Eric Steyer is our best player. Or that Hans was our fourth best defender last year. It's even worse to say that Brase being fourth last year means he's better than Jacobson, as Jacobson is currently 7th in DBPM.

It's very encouraging to have 9 guys with better defensive rating higher than our leading defender a year ago (Lard). That is with only two players back.

Hopefully it is not just due to the schedule thus far, and the four players from last year produce like this new group once Big 12 play starts.

This argument makes my brain hurt. Like 8 pages straight if it today!

Tell you what, Lard and Jacobson should both be playing in 4 days- we can just wait and see how things actually play out then.

I thought it was limited worthless political debate and justifying allocation of resources across different silos of business organizations, but now we're seeing the problem with "facts" right here on Cyclonefanatic.

Simply put, enough statistics exist nowadays that anyone can use some statistic to support essentially any position they desire. All too often, people will take extreme positions and then find statistics to support their position. If they search hard enough, they can find something they can then spin to say the "facts" clearly support my position.

Not surprisingly, the other side can do the same, such that arguments are futile.

With the lecture over, it sure does seem that a player's defensive capability is measured not by any one statistic, but by many. Blocks, rebounds, points allowed and even efficiency (individually, team and even ranking within a team) all are separate indicators, but other indicators can't be measured by mere statistics.

So, just to put all the cards on the table, is this a correct summary?
  • Lard has a higher vertical jump, such that he can block more shots than Jacobson and can get certain rebounds that Jacobson can't get
  • Lard's presence (mainly when helping out, but some on-ball) impacts more shots than Jacobson's presence
  • Jacobsen moves laterally better than Lard, such that he is more capable of guarding anyone (less of a liability guarding guards out top) on a switch than Lard
  • Jacobsen is in the right place on defense (especially on screens and hedging and recovering) more often Lard
  • Lard had a better individual defensive ranking on the team last year than Jacobsen has on the team this year
  • The team has a significantly better defensive ranking this year with Jacobsen playing than the team had with Lard playing
  • The freshmen and Shayok playing this year are better at defense than DJax and the other players from last year that are no longer on the team this year, playing fewer minutes this year than last year or are suspended / injured from this year.
Any other specific evidence to support the various positions?

If not, I'd say it's about a wash.

Against some teams (e.g., those that are capable of making tough shots consistently--think KU/Duke/etc...), we will want to have the dynamic & intimidating Lard rather than the solid & quick Jacobsen.

Against other teams (e.g., those that rely on getting teams out of position and making easy layups/other buckets--think WVU/Texas Tech/etc...), we will want the opposite.

I do know that I trust Prohm and Co to know when to play each or both of their two great post defenders.

Time for a moderator to summarize this long post in three short bullet points.

Except he is reportedly dominating in practice, hardly a descriptor for someone who has "regressed." Him getting stronger and gaining weight also indicates he has been working to improve his game.
