Confident the requirements have been clearly spelled out. I'm sure supports are in place for the young man. He will determine his fate. CMC will not allow anyone to be more important than the ISU Football Family. I would assume [like in the past], CMC has a player leadership group in place that will have a major say in how this progresses. Not concerned at all with ISU, [aka CMC] giving this kid a chance to redeem himself.

I'm all in on my trust in this staff however I will say Young is a risky move If this blows up in Matt's face it will take some of the lusty off the program they have worked so hard to build.

Negative recruiting is a fact of life and taking a convicted felon will be mentioned when coaches are sitting in a kid's livingroom. Hope it works, Guessing the expectations were spelled out.

But why though? If he screws up, he's gone. It's not like we are pinning all our hope on this one kid working out.

Campbell has shown that he will suspend kids who screw up as well. Just look at the 4 freshmen who got in trouble last season. Joe Scates is super talented, but he still was suspended and has to earn his way back into good graces.

This is not a make or break signing. I have full faith that Campbell will do what is needed to keep him out of trouble and if not, he will be punished accordingly.

Didn't help that the head coach ran away to Houston.

Interesting side note. Shortly after Dana left Morgantown I heard someone on sports radio (Probably ESPN) say that W VA current roster is the worst since 2000. That was based on recruiting rankings. I'm guessing Dana was trying to get out before of a couple years of mediocrity.

This guy held up a convenience store his senior year in high school after committing to Penn State. He is their version of Sam Mack. I’m not really a fan of this pickup by Campbell. He’s built his program on character and I’m sure he has set a pretty high standard for Isheem to meet, but it feels too risky for the culture he is building.

Yikes. Well, I'm gonna trust Matt and hope for the best. But I hope this kid knows he'll be out on a$$ if he screws up. Matt's jettisoned other guys.

I must say though that I've always been a proponent of second chances. Wouldn't bother me if ISU were "second (...errrrrrr last) chance U" as long as Campbell is in charge.

It's not hard for me to get behind this one. The only risk is the kid doesn't commit to bettering himself and is suspended or kicked off the team..it's not like it will permanently scar Campbell and the program as every single program in the history of college sports have had individuals screw up.... the reward is Campbell helps him succeed in life with the icing on the cake in that he contributes to the program in an impact full way.

Way up there
I don't get the "risk" or how this is any different than any other recruit. Its not like if he gets in trouble they are going to shut down the program or blow up the stadium. Guys with no criminal history get in trouble all over college football every year. I like the signing, this kid messed up and is now getting a second chance. It's just as likely that going through what he did helped him mature and be more focused knowing that he almost blew it. Worst case scenario he's off the team, best case scenario, he's a total stud that anchors the defensive backfield for 2 or 3 years.

He was never committed to WVU. He was previously committed to Penn State.

From Jared's article:

"Young committed to West Virginia during this cycle, but Dana Holgorsen’s departure for Houston and Iowa State’s addition of former Mountaineers defensive backs coach Matt Caponi opened the door for the Cyclones to add the nation’s No. 30 safety and No. 383 recruit overall."

It's a huge risk because he's a convicted felon. If this goes bad it opens a huge negative recruiting door that could hurt future classes.

Answer me this, if he had signed with Iowa would this board let it slide?

Personally, I'm not too concerned. Campbell seems to have a disciplinarian side to him, and he has shown that he's not afraid to punish players who don't conform to his expectations. I have a feeling that the expectations were laid out and discussed prior to the commitment. If something bad happens, either Campbell will handle it, or the program will continue forward without Young.

Johnnie Lang did some regrettable things before arriving here too. Nonetheless, haven't heard a peep about him having bad character since arriving. Every situation is different, but lets not jump to conclusions.

People don't pay enough attention to the whole story with Lang. The way that he, his family, and friends handled it was outstanding. It is no surprise that he has had no problem here. "Character" is often very closely related to the influence (good and bad) you get from those around you.

Obviously, those offers were from before the armed robbery conviction. But he does still have the same skills that earned him those offers. Seems like we entered the picture late after West Virgina backed off, according to the Des Moines Register..

Don't you have a hok board to prowl around on?

Dude has major character issues. Robbed a gas station at gun point last year. Was going to get 45 years and got it knocked down since he was 17 at the time.

Great, great player but his very recent past is concerning.

Beep beep beep. My troll detector just went off. campbellPirate.png

Of course, we wouldn't let it slide if he signed with the Hoks. That is the nature of rivalries. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't take a chance. If he has the kind of support that Lang had, I think it is a minimal risk.

I have not paid much attention and didn't know the name. However, holy offers Batman. Good news but I do miss the intrigue that NSD has lost.

I don't. NSD turned into an SEC/tOSU love fest and a whole bunch of last minute poaching by the blue bloods. The early signing period is the best thing that could have happened for schools like Iowa and Iowa State.

I don't see it that way. Campbell is fully aware of his history and giving him a chance to prove him self at ISU. If there is some issue that arises we know that Cambell will act and discipline or dismiss him.

I don't think CMC taking Jacob Park has hurt ISU recruitment of QB's. Parks history was very checkered and obviously ended poorly. If it doesn't work out it wont hurt recruiting. In fact, it can help recruiting by showing talented players with a history can get a chance but to full fill their potential they need to live up to the commitment.

Not to say his prior issues/de-commitments shouldn't be discussed but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and trust Cambell that he vetted and trusted him.
I will judge Young from the day he signs with ISU through his career, his history is just that.
