Hockenson and Fant are 6'4 and 6'5 and 250 lbs. Pretty average sized TEs. But they are fast and are good route runners. They still have to block DEs and LBs, so odds are that capability is going to come with a bigger frame. In general the trend of quickness and route running over size at the TE position has happened as well, it's just not quite as massive.

I think anti-ISU bias paranoia is pretty silly. If there were a bunch of guys in the league outplaying their draft position from ISU you might have a case. ISU guys don't get drafted because until this year guys weren't good enough or aren't what teams are looking for. Tons of guys are getting into camps, so it's not like ISU guys are getting black-balled or something. Iowa TEs get drafted because they're good on film, they show up at the combine and perform well, and happen to be in the mold of what NFL teams want right now.

Those two guys are the same height or shorter than Butler. They are slightly larger and fast for a TE but they ran slower 40's than Butler. It is just not consistent. Noah Fant and Butler have pretty similar numbers but different positions.

It's all about the past. These people are too scared of losing their jobs. So the history of Iowa TE or OL gives them an excuse. That is all. It's just a bit of a bias towards their comfort zone. It is not an anti-ISU bias.

It's great the NFL is rotating locales for the Draft--- a lot of fluff but better than NYC every year with the obligatory drunk, as#hat Giants fans and Jets fans, on camera the entire draft

Location rotation is probably a good move. Anchoring it in NYC, though, had at least one amusing element for me: Jets fans frequently react like each draft choice their team makes is an atrocity.

Are people really this naive? U think the word around the NFL is “don’t draft guys from Iowa State”?

Turned out that Lazard being an UDFA was about right-signed to a practice squad and late in the year picked up by the Pack.

If a guy can help ur team, he will be picked at some point! For all the people saying, “the NFL hates ISU”, you also need to keep in mind that the NFL certainly knows who Campbell is as he was inquired about by at least a couple teams this past off season. Why would they pass on ISU players who aren’t developed but be interested in the head coach?

Come on.

Yeah ISU is 16-33 during our current draft drought. It's not because of bias. It's because we haven't had NFL quality players.

Regardless of where he lands I think Butler has a great chance to make a splash next season if he ends up in the right situation. He's a highlight waiting to happen. All he needs is one huge catch and chucking a defender off him when he lands and he will be all over the internet.
I think Montgomery is a lot more likely to make an impact next year, it usually takes Wide Receivers a couple years to get going in the NFL.

Wouldn't mind seeing DM to Detroit in the 3rd round. A Kerryon Johnson-Montgomery tandem with Hockinson setting the edge with a team that's trying to build a Seattle-style "run first" offense/win with defense? Yes please. He'd thrive in the kind of system they're trying to build.

Uggh, I put the Lions up there with the Redskins, Bengals, Dolphins and Browns, holding out hope he's there when the Bears draft in the 3rd round.

JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Akili Smith,.......

It's an inexact science for sure, but it's also incorrect and lazy to argue that teams don't spend a **** load of money and resources on scouting and evaluation (except the Bengals). For every bust player you name there's a late round pick who went on to a great NFL career, and that doesn't happen without some area scout noticing some random kid on an FCS team that is just killing it while their team is down four TDs against a P5 program, or noticing someone else making play after play when they're watching tape of another prospect. Teams work plenty to evaluate and catalog and rank players, but when you get down to it it's largely guesswork with the information you have available.

The trend now is to hoard picks. Smart front office guys are finally essentially admitting that they're just making educated guesses and they're not seers of the future. But they do understand the value of getting as many bites at the apple as possible.

Lazard being an UDFA was not proven or disproven by last year. He should have been drafted and we will likely see the result of that in the next couple years.

The NFL looking at Campbell doesn’t prove anything either. In fact I’d say it probably says the opposite and it probably has a point. The NFL is amazed he has done as well as he has with “bad” players.

People also have to recognize that the frustration blends between the two leagues. On the NBA side we had 5 players make the playoffs and the top pick of them was Georges at #50.

My question is who has gone to the NFL and not exceeded/met expectations?

Well, yeah - you as a Bears fan wouldn't want to see the preeminent cellar dweller do something that actually makes sense and makes them a better team.

For those that know the process better, do ALL draftees only get drafted by NFL teams they supposedly already 'officially met' with? Or can a team come up on the clock and feel the 'best available' overrides and could still draft someone they haven't talked with?

A team doesn't have to meet with a player in order to take them. You'll hear about it every once in a while from a draftee - maybe the team chatted with the player for a few minutes at the combine and then had no further contact up until they call them on draft day. I think it's usually so a team can conceal interest in a player they covet.

Can draft them without talking to them. In fact, sometimes teams don't talk/meet with a player on purpose so other teams won't know they are interested in that particular player.

Ok, cool. Was hoping that was the case just because I actually don't like mock drafts predicting where players go ahead of time like there's no suspense or behind the scenes decision making left. Then let me ask this.... is there a time at the combine, or wherever, when players are interviewed and ALL NFL teams representatives are present, or its just based on individual team's asking to interview who they select?

At the combine each team is limited to a maximum of sixty fifteen minute interviews. Post-combine each team is allowed thirty official pre-draft visits where they can have a player at their facility and do everything but work the player out. I would guess that's where a lot of the "board work" and game tape breakdown goes on. There are other rules in place for events like the Senior Bowl and pro days, etc.

I'm thinking they both go in the 3rd round tonight. Butler to the Steelers, Montgomery to the Eagles.
