Prohm's got one more chance whether you like it or not. I choose to hope for the best.

this is interesting. Does one more chance mean one more year? A lot of fans believe it means one more year. I wonder how JP interprets one more chance? Another 1 or another 5?

I dont understand the prohm haters, they say we need more talent and that's his fault, but when 3 players that were bottom of the rotation transfer they lose their minds. Do you want to get better? Or be loyal to marginal players, cant have it both ways

My issue with him is: He struggles to connect with players. Battles with McKay and Wiggy we know of that cost ISU better seasons. He has had a revolving door since he got here - plus he is not a great X' and O's coach.

Don't like losing Grill - from what i understand he grew up an ISU fan, he was going to be a solid player in a year or two. And he wants out.

Maybe Fred raised our expectations too high, but I also remember the Floyd and Larry years - this school has potential to be a constant top 25 team and a regular in the tourney.

I just don't see ISU getting back there with SP

Grill 3rd in the depth chart at the 2 behind a FR & SO. Guessing he didn't want to play out position his entire career.

We currently have 5 players. There is no depth chart. He was big enough to play either the 2 or 3.

McKay had a history of clashing with Coaches all the way back to Indian Hills. He was not much of a Team before me kinda guy.

And part of being a coach is managing those personalities and getting the most out them without damaging your program. it would appear hoiberg was able to do so, and prohm was not. Not saying one is more right than the other, hoiberg recruited McKay, prohm didn't.

People stretch this development thing to the breaking point.

Yup, guys improve but you either have it or you don't covers way, way more situations.
You could tell by watching all 3 of these guys this year, and especially the older 2, that they were living in their own heads. They all played like they knew it was only a matter of time before they'd miss an assignment, make a mistake, and get pulled. These guys all have physical tools, and maybe mental midgets is too harsh, but they lacked the ability to be checked in consistently. We need the next group coming in to be mentally tough

Sometimes. Then sometimes a guy throws a chair at you at halftime during an absolutely embarrassing loss to some team called "the Blazers."

I was more so referring to McKay, but yeah hoiberg definitely had issues with BDJ. As did everyone. He was however able to work well with Kane, white, McKay, and lucious.

Is that what they're calling those situations? Working well with someone?

Also I'm not sure if letting players leave practice (reportedly) and other things is 'managing' as much as it is enabling.
I agree, which is why I put "without damaging your program" in there as a qualifier. McKay sure played hard in the games for Hoiberg and was dpoy in the big 12.

How do you know it didn't damage the program or team? That 2015 team was good but commonly felt like a house of cards.

I can't agree that players being enabled just to get wins is a good or sustainable tactic.

Call it baby sitting, call it whatever you want. He made it work and we won a lot of games and got to watch great entertaining basketball.

And it blew up on him just before he left -- the 2015 team had oodles of talent and could beat anybody, but they could find a way to lose to just about anybody, as well.

Just before the transfer market became much more competitive.

And just before everybody started playing 4/5 out.

Hoiberg was an innovator, but the sport was starting to catch up with him.

A dose of pepper on our high-achieving coaches of the past:
To help you forget that there is no March Madness in 2020 and to commemorate the joy it’s provided sports fans over the years, USA TODAY Sports highlights the 10 best first-round upsets since the tournament expanded in 1985.

10. No. 15 Hampton beats No. 2 Iowa State (2001). Coach Steve Merfield’s running fist-pumping celebration in the aftermath of the the Pirates’ 58-57 lastsecond win is the stuff of legends. Tarvis Williams nailed a go-ahead shot with 10 seconds left and Cyclones guard Jamal Tinsley had a potential gamewinner rim out as time ran out.

Like most things we talk about on this site, we don't know for sure it didn't cause issues, but I don't remember there being any reported on or discussed here, however there sure was issues talked about regarding McKay when prohm was the coach. Managing personalities is part of the job, as is recruiting the right personality type for your program.

And people forget how well McKay played down the stretch after being in the doghouse with Prohm. The last few reg season was maybe the best he ever played. If the rumors of McKays attitude toward practice were true, if left unchecked it damages a program long term. I think we were fortunate to have really mature players around to keep things afloat and not have his problems affect the team.
I do think Hoiberg and his staff did some enabling, but I do think they did a good job managing some personalities that had issues before.
