Pollard being arrogant over the years

The No TJ Crowd is brain dead.

From the Las Vegas review journal about a TJ move to ISU:

"It would have more to do with Otzelberger's two stints as a assistant coach in Ames and these relationships he and his wife Alison built there than anything that has transpired at UNLV.

He's 29-30 overall and 20-16 in the Mountain West. You're not landing many gigs, much less in the Big 12 off of that."

So let's hope if he is the hire he does well. Or the brain dead stamp won't be on those who are reluctant.

Some of yall act real butt hurt sometimes, yeah Pollard isn't perfect but just look back at our athletic department before Pollard came here and now, it is just incredible, and also he found and has kept the guy who has made ISU football good for the first time in many of our lives. Just relax.

I feel like his “arrogance” is more akin to a midwestern version of Steve Jobs. Jobs was known to ruffle quite a bit of feathers but he had a singular vision and concept of what he wanted Apple to be and resurrected a company that was floundering.

By comparison, ever since JP got the job, he’s laid out a singular vision for the athletic department and catapulted its image far beyond what it’s used to be.The way he’s sold the AD to fans, to the media, etc. is unparalleled compared to previous eras of ISU athletics.

I think a lot of the folks here need to log off the internet for the day and just trust the process.

As a friend of Chris though, I would tell you all to stay here and keep posting and clicking :)

Funny thing is what was considered to be bad hires at the time turned out the best. Hoiberg had no experience and people were concerned we’d have to fire a legend in a few years. A lot of people responded with “who?” when Campbell was announced. And then he just brought his entire coaching staff with him instead of finding the best coaches. Oh, the horrors!

Meanwhile Chizik was considered a home run. You never know.

JP is not arrogant. He is pragmatic and confident which is what you want in an AD. I'll take JP any day of the week.

Politicians ARE arrogant... and narcissists... and NOT pragmatic. But that's for another thread.

Pretty much everyone was on board with Campbell.

Arrogance is surrounded by fine lines. As a recruiter, when I screen candidates, especially for management roles I look for the right confidence to competence ratio. It is not a number score but more of a feel. The more competent you are the more confidence you can portray which some people take as arrogance. From the outside looking in I'd say Jamie has a healthy balance.

Also for all you Pollard haters. Who would you rather have as AD? There are plenty of bigger brand schools that have whiffed on coaches. Yea, I'm looking at you TX and Florida State. This was Jamie's first gig as AD. I'd say he has done great overall.

Maybe on this site. General fans had no idea who he was and had higher expectations. I know a lot of people weren’t happy with him bringing the same staff over saying they weren’t ready for Big XII.

  • Greg was one of his first hires, I give him a pass on that because at the time it was a really good hire
  • Prohm was actually Leath's hire back in the day. TJ would already be here it was Pollard's pick
  • Wrestling is a niche sport, hard to weigh good and bad decisions when you don't have millions of more dollars like MBB and FB
  • Chizik was a good hire, he just took off for greener pastures. How would he have predicted that would happen?
What the hell is people's problem with hiring TJ? I would rather have somebody who understands our program and has some past success as a head coach, versus hiring somebody who is unrelated to our program and has past success. Prohm was a good example of that. Murray State was going to win with or without Prohm, plus raw talent recruiting that Prohm had at Murray elevated him beyond the need for culture/coaching fundamentals.

Anyone who criticizes Pollard because of the above has lost grip on reality and what the athletic program was a short 20 years ago. These are the same people that probably have never worked or been in a career where they make big boy decisions and then actually own them afterward. Not all decisions are the best in retrospect, but you can argue that you're making the best decision at that time.

This would work, but we have plenty of floundering programs.

Pollard is arrogant, thin skinned, and extremely defensive. He inserts himself into things he has no business addressing and frequently comes off as a whiner.

He's also the best AD in school history by a country mile.

You take the bad with the good. As annoying as he is, he's presided over the most successful football in school history, kept us in a major conference, hired the winningest basketball coach in school history, and lead some serious facility upgrades.

Ok, since this silly thread is already going, I have a question.
It's asserted JP is hiring his "buddy". Are we sure about that? There's a big difference between identifying someone you want to work with and developing that relationship over time, and being buddies. I suspect it's the former, not the latter, but I don't know. Does anyone?

Prohm, Chiz, McD were all the right hires at the time though. They were all hot names at the time and if JP wouldn't have hired them another P5 school certainly would have. It just goes to show you that there is no bullet proof criteria when you are hiring a head coach.
