It's five players vs five players. There's no magic. It's effort and coaching.
There's not a single player on Loyola that Illinois would even think of talking to, let alone offer a schollie to.

1. Loyola is playing outstanding defense.
2. Illinois has not adjusted to said defense.

Both things can be true

On that subject, in the "nobody asked" category, this is first time in 20 years I haven't had the 4 opening weekend days off from work. Had planned to continue again this season, but colleague had a death in the family and I have to cover. So the streak has ended.

Not a big deal, only missing the first set of games Fri & Mon, for the most part.
Sorry to hear that. That is fully understandable.

Clearly the key to future success is to find a center that looks like a 40 year old man

Looks like the guy who gets picked last at the Y but then just clinics everyone.

That last lob by Illinois showed his limitations though.

Illinois started getting to the hoop there at the end and might prevail.

Probably a small victory to have it back to single digits.

Underwood and his staff better have good adjustments for the second half. Otherwise they won't get over the hump.

Loyola is a case study on how inept the selection committee is at least once per year. Ranked 1st in Defensive Efficiency, I think they are 10th overall on KenPom and 12th on BartTorvick, but yeah, totally an 8 seed.

For bracket-guessing purposes, I assumed Loyola would be a popular upset pick 'cuz of previous run. But I thought "that's too obvious" and didn't go with it.

For an 8-over-1 I was more inclined to try LSU-Michigan. Eventually I chickened out of that, too (in my $ pool).

I suspect Illinois will come back to win this game, but this game is only reinforcing why Moser was my #1 choice for ISU, assuming we could have gotten him of course.

I am shocked in a year with minimal non-con to gauge the conferences the big 10 gets crowned the best conference and underperforms in the tournament.

A team that overwhelmed most of the Big 10 with athleticism and speed looks very ordinary athletically vs a Valley team.

Moser is a good coach but it's taken him over a decade to build this program. Count me out for 57-52 wins over TCU in Hilton every year.

His style would be a horrible fit for Iowa State.
